Last week Gretz pointed out that the Patriots could very well put the franchise tag on Matt Cassel. Obviously, this move has everything to do with Tom Brady, who suffered a season-ending knee injury roughly 10 minutes into Week 1. If tagged, it means that Cassel's in line for more than $14 million to either reassume his role on the bench, remain the team's starter, or some combination of the two. In December, NBCSports.com's Tom Curran wrote that, according to a source, Brady's rehab was behind schedule, he might need another surgery, and if it came to that, it could cost him his 2009 season.
A day later, SI.com's Peter King, via his source, refuted Curran's account, but admitted that "Now I was also told that they wouldn't be surprised -- these people close to Tom Brady -- that the Patriots might be placing a story ... that could end up getting them more ... more value for Matt Cassel in the offseason when he becomes a free agent."
And then there's this update, from this morning's Dan Patrick Show:
Curran says Tom Brady's knee is still screwed up, so the Patriots will franchise-tag Matt Cassel. Curran even says Cassel will play next year, because he doesn't expect Brady to be ready by Week 1.Pancake Blocks' Gregg Rosenthal adds that "Curran doesn't believe that the Patriots will really be able to wait to see how Brady's recovery is going. He thinks Cassel will play next year, and that 'most likely' Brady will start the year on the PUP list. Wow. We have a looong way to go with this story, but there appears to be a better chance of a Brady/Cassel combo for '09 than imagined."
And it'll only tie up some $29 million in salary-cap space to keep them both on the roster. Actually, I think franchising Cassel is the right move. It's a huge up-front cost, but it's only for one year; and if Brady's healthy, well, just consider it the price of fielding a Super Bowl-caliber team.
I'm still not convinced Cassel is anything more than an above-average backup; I mean, there's no reason for the Vikings, Lions, Jets or whomever to throw a lot of dough his way (or worse, give the Patriots a handful of first-day picks for him) under the assumption that he'll magically shore up the position.
Still, there's also no denying that he outperformed everybody's expectations this season. And if Brady's not ready for the start of '09, Cassel is a very capable alternative. Basically, he's like the Cardinals' Matt Leinart -- the guy he sat behind at USC -- but good.

Ryan,
An important point about Cassel is that he is coachable. He began the season with a very limited playbook, expanding it under Josh McDaniel as his confidence grew.
Most head coaches will value this trait above or at least equal to arm strength and mobility, He had few bad games .
The guy is a winner and I am sure Belechick likes him as a major insurance policy for 09. By all accounts he is quite a leader like Tom Terrific. Do not discount his value Ryan..

I for one wanted another QB I wanted them to sign DANTE but the lions did and the PATRIOTS stuck with CASSEL. I know now it was a good idea just image if there where no injuries with the patriots except Tom Brady they may ave had another 2 or even 3 wins with TOM BRADY they may have gone unbeaten again I can see Cassel sticking around for 09 season as insurance then doing a renegotiated contract to stay with the Patriots to be BRADYS security blanket sort to speak just in case why leave a team you know you are comfortable with and where the fans like him unless he gets greedy he can be a 3 to 6 million dollar back up a year for carrying a clip board after his 14 million season ;

VICK SHOULD GO TO DALLAS---JINES HAS PROVEN HE CAN REHABILATE ANYBODY.IF DALLAS KEPT UP WITH MIAMI THIS YEAR THEY {ALONG WITH OTHER NFL TEAMS} MIGHT FIGURE OUT THAT IT IS BETTER TO PUT KNOWLEGEBALE PEOPLE IN THE FRONT OFFICE THAN TO FIRE THE COACH.

Hey Charlie, if Dallas is the place to rehabilitate, then Pacman must be up for sainthood. Whoops! Fighting with your bodyguard must be part of their twelve-step program.

I really hope Brady doesn't lose too much more time out of his career. It's a shame really.

Ken,
It's every college quarterbacks dream to be a STARTING QB in the NFL. Now that Cassell got a taste of being starting for a solid team like the Pats, there is no way he would be willing to take a back seat to Tom Brady and ride the bench. If Tom comes back for the '09 season and Cassell can go elsewhere for more money and a STARTING position he will no doubt do that. We love him over here, and he would be missed, but he has to do what he has to in order to secure himself a starting position and to get the most money possible after this breakout season. I'd hate to see him go, but I would never expect him to sit out and watch TB reclaim the the leadership role. He would become one of those rare players that you still love and respect even after he leaves your team.
