The answer, invariably, is Bill Cowher. Whenever fans or media talk about the perfect fit as Team X's head coach, Cowher's name comes up. Every time. Redskins? Replace Zorn with Cowher. Browns? Hire Cowher and hope Crennel just figures it out. Lions, Jets, Cowboys, Panthers, Broncos -- basically any organization that might be contemplating a coaching change today or at some point in the next decade -- Cowher's the man for the job.
Well, as Mr. Chin has stated previously, he's not coming back in 2009. And if you don't take the man at his word, how about a contract stating as much. Via the Dallas Morning News' Barry Horn:
But now comes word that [Cowher] has decided not to interview for the Jets job or the Browns job. It looks like he isn't in the Cowboys non-mix, either. The Cowboys, you may have heard, are sticking with Wade Phillips. Imagine this headline: "Coach Cowher not interviewing for non-vacant Cowboys coaching job." Wow, sports journalism is sure changing. So there you go: Cowher would rather spend his weekends during the football season with James, Dan, Shannon and Boomer. And it's not like there aren't good head-coaching gigs available, just that he apparently enjoys low-stress, part-time television work over the 24/7 world of the NFL.
And to top it all off, CBS and Cowher have agreed to a contract extension that will keep him the network's pre-game studio for another year.
That's right, Teevee Cowher is warm, fuzzy, and eminently relatable. Shocking, yes.

BILL COWHER IS SMART ENOUGH TO KNOW WHERE IS COMFORTABLE... AT LEAST FOR NOW HE DOES WELL AT CBS. HE KNOWS THE STRESS OF COACHING. AND DOESNT WANT TO STEP BACK INTO THE PRESSURES OF COACHING...I SAY HE MADE THE RIGHT DECISION TO STAY OFF THE FIELD.. CBS HAS THE WIN THIS TIME AROUND.

this was the move i thought he would make. anywhere else would simply be ridiculous!!

Steeler fans love Cowher and I am one of them. We finally got the one for the thumb. It wasn't just Cowher's game but Rothlingsburger, Bettis and all the other players who really made the Steeler Nation proud of their accomplishments. That was a year of hard work on all their parts and not something most teamms can repeat every year. Thank you to the players of Super bowl XL for another bowl victory. I have been a fan for a long time and saw the two bowl games in Miami. Cowher does a good job of brodcasting on CBS. Stay there and enjoy the easier schedule.

Warm, fuzzy and eminently relatable, huh? lol Whatever, unless you're trying to sound like someone's dense grandmother I'd suggest you put a little backbone into future observations.

Dave, see the highlighted text after the "warm, fuzzy..." comments? Those are called "hyperlinks." It's a technical intertubes term, but if you click it, you'll be transported to another page. What you find there may help explain my dense, grandmotherly observations. Jeebus already.

Great man Cowher, doing exactly what he said he would for the reasons he said he was doing it, leaving the Steelers head coaching job that is, to spend time with his family until his girls are out of school. Imagine, a man of his word this day and age in the NFL, WOW!!! Way to go Cowher, just like when you were our teams coach, man of your word. Keep it up and show others what it means to have some respect and not to blantantly lie to try to get what you want. This is great, and it is fun watching stupid reporters trying to eat back their reporting.

In full disclosure I am from Pittsburgh and a big Cowher and Steelers fan. However the way I read it was Cowher backed out of talks with the Jets when the owner failed to sit down with him in person.
Let's not cannonize Cowher just yet. He can do what he likes and I hold no ill will if he does coach somewhere else. But lets be honest and say when he decidied not to take it, "spending time with family" was not his only consideration.

Good call... That way Tampa Bay can sign him after Gruden fails to make the play-offs again next year. This clown Gruden is unreal. 9-3 leading the division going in to Dec and we lose 4 in row.( we only needed one win to make the play-offs) The low point has to be beaten by Oakland at home.. The Buc's have plenty of money. Going to be interesting what Jon-boy does next year. We don't have QB signed and our defense is older than Al Davis. First class operation with at best a line coach doing the head coaching. .. The Glaziers need to fire him and that so called GM Bruce Allen.. They are both a joke.

I heard the tail end of the CBS team congratulating Cowher for "being back in the NFL". What gives? Where is he going?
