The New York Jets are in a precarious position right now, primarily because they were Problem is that it's widely believed Cowher wants nothing to do with the current Jets GM, Mike Tannenbaum, presuming he's interested in the job for realsies. Which may have the Jets reconsidering their stance on not dumping Tannenbaum, at least according to MORTSCOOP.
A high-ranking Jets official told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that the team is still planning to speak to Cowher about its vacant head coaching job. No time or place for the interview has been set, but the official says the Jets would be willing to do "whatever is necessary" to land Cowher if he is truly interested in taking the job.Of course, as TJB noted (and I'm actually of the belief that a "high ranking Jets official" might really be "Brian Bassett's RSS feed"), everything SCOOP says needs to be tied to a frozen chunk of the Adriatic Sea.
Cowher plans to speak publicly for the first time about the Jets' opening and other coaching opportunities during CBS' wild-card pregame show on Sunday, a source told 1050 ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand.
Initially, ESPN.com's John Clayton reported Cowher told the Jets he was not interested because he wanted his own personnel director. The Jets official's response indicates the team is willing to let Cowher replace current general manager Mike Tannenbaum with his own candidate.
Besides, it's entirely possible that Cowher is just using this to opportunity -- and the Browns rejection before that -- to remind everyone that he can have any coaching job that he wants, were he willing to return to the sidelines.
Naturally, since Mort dropped this news, there's already been another contradictory release from the AP about whether Cowher needs "total control" or not. And in the time it took me to write that sentence, Adam Schefter -- who is on top of everything -- has already decided to mock everyone who thinks Jawface will actually end up in New York.

I would like to see Bill be the coach of the Jets. Sure Brett did not play up to his potential in the last 6 games, but, Mangini should have set his wideouts on the bench. Besides not running their patterns, they gaveup half way through them. The rookie tight end was the only one that gave his all. The defense and the offensive line gave up long before mid season and the best runner in the AFC before the meltdown was outstanding. When all else fails, the writers have to cut the whatchacallits off the coach and the quarterbacks. Too bad the CEO's of sportswriters don't do the same thing.

Jets fans would be fools to want Bill on the SL. Unless of course your goal is good enough to get to the playoffs and lose winable games. - Scott, Steelers fan.

I do not understand the hype about Bill Cowher. He obviously has a good press agent. It took this guy 15 years to win a superbowl. It took Billick 1 year. I don't get it.

His own personnel guy because that guy would get rid of Favre? Makes sense to me.

He is a game analyst on FOX. Supposedly waiting for his next coaching stint. I happened to have met him "briefly"just after the Ravens let him go at the Puerto Vallarta airport. He was on the same flight out to Houston. I walked up and introduced myself. I asked "Excuse me but aren't you Brian Billick?". He indeed was. I said I was a big fan. "Brian Billick, pleased to meet you". I didn't want to bother him and his wife & daughters and wished a good flight. Very cool.
It was then I started doing some research on him when I got home. This guys is sharp. Smart as all get out. Great coach. Excellent motivator. He would be a great addition for us. They say he can't handle the media. He can actually. He feeds it right back to them. We need someone with his intensity. He is a winner.
We can go the coordinator route. But has that really gotten us anywhere? The last two times we hired Championship coaches we were succesful for a while. One got us to the AFC chamionship for the first (and last) time in 37 years. That would be the Tuna.
The other one? Oh, that would be a a certain gentleman in the HOF. Anyone remember Weeb? I think so.
