We can mock the Lions' 0-16 season, wonder how good the Patriots would have been if Tom Brady didn't blow out his knee, or speculate over which NFC team is most likely to give the Giants trouble in the playoffs. But after watching a wild December of football, it's hard to avoid the fact that 2008 is the year where an amazing number of teams simply gagged their way out of the playoffs. Usually there are one or two teams that peaked in October and failed to live up to their potential, this year, we had a futile four that all choked away what were once seemingly safe playoff berths.
Here's a ranking of who sucked the worst in a season that saw plenty of teams throw away their chance at playoffs glory.
The Mama Cass (Four-Star Choke Job)
Dallas Cowboys (1-3 in December). When December started, the Cowboys knew they faced one of the toughest schedules in the league. But sitting at 8-4, they also knew that simply going 2-2 would assure them of a playoff spot. Every one of Dallas' three losses this month is defensible, as the Cowboys lost to three playoffs teams--the Steelers, Ravens and Eagles. But it's how the Cowboys lost it that will ensure this ranks among the worst seasons in Cowboys history.
Needing a stop against the Ravens, Dallas allowed two 70+ yard touchdown runs in the final five minutes. Needing a win over the Eagles to earn a playoff spot, Dallas trailed 27-3 at halftime. Quarterback Tony Romo had a quarterback rating of 99 or better in September, October and November, then threw only five touchdowns compared to six interceptions while racking up a 67.9 rating in December. Romo's yet to have a quarterback rating above 80 in December and in each of this three seasons as a starter, he's played his worst in the final month of the season.
Jerry Jones will likely fire another coach, no matter what he says about Wade Phillips' job being safe, which means Dallas will have its sixth head coach in 12 years. But it's funny that the general manager (who happens to also be named Jerry Jones) throughout that 12-year stretch will continue to have absolute job security. Jones may have run off Jimmy Johnson because he got tired of Johnson getting all the credit for the Cowboys' dynasty, but the fact remains that ever since Johnson left, Jones has won nothing since Johnson's players got old.
Needs A Heimlich (Three-Star Choke Job)
New York Jets (1-4 in their final five games). Was it just over a month ago that the Jets were considered to potentially be the class of the AFC? Sitting at 8-3 with a win over the previously undefeated Titans, New York looked prime to finally give its fans something to cheer about, after making it to the AFC Championship game only twice in the past 37 years.
But that was before Brett Farve took his legacy and yacked all over it, throwing eight interceptions and only two touchdowns in December. New York would have won the AFC East if they could have just gone 2-2 against the Broncos, 49ers, Bills and Seahawks--four teams that will be sitting at home come playoff time.
Instead, New York came into the finale against the Dolphins knowing that even a win wouldn't assure them a playoff spot. And now Jets fans can see how much fun the Packers fans had spending the offseason playing the "will Farve retire?" game.
Quick Grab Him Some Water (Two-Star Choke Job)
Tampa Bay Bucs (0-4 in December): When the month began, Tampa was sitting at 9-3 coming off a key division win against the Saints. With games left against the Panthers and Falcons, Tampa knew that the path to a division title would still be difficult, but with games against the Chargers and Raiders to wrap up the season, the Bucs seemed assured of at least a wild card spot.
It's easy to forgive Tampa Bay for its losses to Carolina and Atlanta--both division opponents played very good football over the final month of the season. And maybe we can excuse them for losing at home to a hot Chargers team.
But how can Tampa Bay lose at home to the Raiders when a win assures a playoff spot? It's easy to explain what happend--Tampa's usually intimidating defense decided to go on strike. The Bucs allowed a 150-yard rusher in three of their final four games and more than 30 points three times in December, after not allowing 30 points in any of their first 12 games.
Let Me Clear My Throat (One-Star Choke Job)
Denver Broncos (1-3 in December): Every week we heard how the Broncos needed just one win or a Chargers' loss to wrap up the AFC West. And every week when the games were finished, you could still say the same thing.
But unlike the other teams on this list, there are some extenuating circumstances for the Broncos. Denver has had one of the NFL's worst defenses all year, and there's really no excuse for that. But it's understandable that the offense fell apart when Denver was forced to put five tailbacks on injured reserve.
It's safe to say that the Chargers did the league a favor by knocking the Broncos out of the playoffs--defenses this bad should not be playing in January. But unlike the other teams on this list, the Broncos were never very good, so it's not as much of a choke job as simply a mediocre team being exposed for what it was.

Hey,NincomPooper, er, I mean Cooper. If "the Broncos were never really good" like the other "choke" teams on your list, why did the Denver Broncos kick the crap out of Tampa Bay and the New York Jets this year in the regular season, and crush Dallas in the pre-season? Why did Denver rack up 500 yards in a dominating performance over San Diego in week 2? And why did Denver's offense rank 2nd in the NFL this year? You are an incredible idiot who deserves a major face rearrangement along with some remedial education about football.....

Hey Willie, only a complete no-nothing moron brags about dominating someone in preseason. The fact of the matter is that Denver played in by far the worst division in football this year and still couldn't win it. Sure they had a decent offense, but if you have a horrible defense and your only hope is to outscore everyone, you're gonna be an inconsistent and mediocre team.
And at 8-8, that's exactly what the Broncos are, despite their preseason domination of the Cowboys.

Hey, Willie, every knowledgeable football fan knows the Broncos are nothing special. Thin air effecting your brain?? Watch the playoffs and see how much better the teams are. Personally I think it's time for a coaching change.

Truth be told, the Broncos have an unpredictable -- at times very potent -- offense, but the Chargers moved up and down the field at will, doing anything and everything they wanted to with essentially no opposition against the defense. This puts too much pressure on Cutler to score every time Denver has the ball, because if they do not, the defense is back on the field. By the 3rd quarter today, the "D" was gassed and couldn't even tackle. Cutler has a gun of an arm, but should keep quiet when comparing himself to all time greats; whether this makes him a "punk" or not is open to interpretation. Also, the pre-season means nothing, and as we found out today, neither Tampa nor the Jets turned out to be very good.

If it was not for INCOMPETENT officiating the Chargers would be at least at 12-4, but they have always been victims of the refs. Check any 20 Chargers games since 2000 and you'll find the Chargers have been the recipients of far more blown calls (bad calls (like the Ed H. call) or non-calls (obvious penalties that didn't get flagged)) than any of their opponents. In fact in the same game that made Ed H. very well known, there was a play that was not reviewed because of 'malfunctioning' review equipment, if EITHER call had been changed, the Chargers would have won the game (that's how pivotal the calls were). Another example is the recent Steeler-Raven game, the last touchdown was a 'gift' to the Steelers (Yes; his feet were down in the end-zone, yes; the ball broke the goal-line at the instant of contact with his hands, but when you consider that the officials are sticklers for ball control, he did NOT have control in the end-zone), so the Steelers got an unearned touchdown.
The officials should be fined and/or ejected for significant or repeated blown calls. Ed H. was supposed to let the play continue (even IF it had been an incomplete pass) because no one had made contact with the quarterback.

If you look at one thing about 3 of 4 of the teams on this list. All but one of them played and lost to the Raiders. the Jets lost to them in Oakland right after Kiffen was fired, starting the reason why the Jets couldn't win a game on the West Coast. Then the Broncos get beat by them at home 2 weeks ago. and early Christmas Gift to all Raiders Fans. And then when their Playoff Hopes were on the line, the Buccaneers couldn't seal the deal. The only reason the Cowboys didn't lose to them, is the fact that they didn't play them. I'm not saying that the Raiders are a great team. They're inconsistent at best. But if the coaching staff gets a few good draft picks this year, and could come up with some good recruting for the defense and Wide Reciever position. The Raiders might have a chance to recover in the next few years. One last bit of advise for Al Davis and the Raiders Staff. With a player like JaMarcus Russel as QB, I think a change of Offensive strategy is needed. Its worked with the Wildcat Offense for the Dolphins. But why don't you try something like the Pistol Offense thats being used by the University of Nevada. Check it out during the Humanitarian Bowl on Tuesday. Its a great system from what I've seen.

Here's the lowdown
Denver - was never that good just in a bad division, horrific defense
Bucs - in a great division with tough opponents, defense fell apart at end and offense led by Jeff Garcia will never make it to the next step
Jets - what can u say, they did what they always do, choke.....Favre is old, Mangini lost his players, this team needs a mental overhaul
Cowboys - Phillips is a pansy, Jones is psychotic, TO is an egomaniac who destroys all in his wake, and Romo just wants to be a celebrity more than a champion,, end result is BOOM........GONE

Denver beat the Raiders 41-6 and outplayed San Diego 500 yards to 300 yards in the first two weeks of the season. True, Denver's defense sucked this year, and they did not deserve to make the playoffs, but you clowns all missed my basic point. This Cooper idiot said Denver "was never good" this year, compared to the Jets, Bucs, and Cowboys, who all LOST to Denver THIS YEAR before the Broncos lost half of their starters to injuries. As for the comment about Dallas, Denver's first stringers totally outplayed Dallas' first stringers (and the rest of the Cowboys' squad) in their pre-season game at Invesco this year. I'm just putting some basic facts out there for young Nincompooper...

The Cowboys will always sell out for games, they will always make money on their name brand. They don't have to win anything. They are merely amusing and make good press. Nobody in or out of that organization know what the heck is happening there.

Why is everyone blaming the Jets' season entirely on Brett??? Is he the only player on the team? Is there no coaching staff or play calling by another individual? It seems to me that if Brett still had receivers like Donald Driver and Greg Jennings, perhaps the last 5 games of the season would have been different. Am I wrong, or is it the wide receiver's job to go after the ball that's been thrown? I was at the last Jets' game and there was one pass to Coles that was slightly overthrown. But when we got home and I watched the recording of the game, Coles just gave up right before the ball started coming down instead of putting in that little extra to try to make the grab. All I've got to say is, where's the heart for the game in the rest of the team? The defense tanked also in the last 5 games, but I don't hear anyone blaming Chris Jenkins, Ty Law, or anyone else!
