Tom Brady's season ended back in Week 1 and he spent the next four months having knee surgery and mustering the courage to ask for his ladyfriend's hand in marriage.
Good news: SHE SAID YES. Bad news: Brady's rehab is behind schedule, which could complicate the Patriots' offseason quarterbackin' plans. Specifically: what to do with Matt Cassel, Brady's backup who has fared surprisingly well as the starter.
NBC.com's Tom Curran has the details on Tommy Terrific's knee:
Brady, who had the ACL and MCL in his left knee ripped in the first quarter of the season's first game, is well behind schedule in coming back from the surgery performed in early October, the source said.Curran adds that Brady could need another surgery to tighten the ligaments*, and that could cost him the 2009 season. If he doesn't have the second surgery, Brady will probably have to wear a knee brace because "the area will be susceptible to another blowout, the source said."
After the infection was detected [in October], Brady went through six weeks of antibiotics and surgical irrigation of the infected area. The infection finally cleared but as it currently stands, both the ACL and MCL remain "loose," the league source said. Meanwhile, scar tissue that built up in the knee as Brady's body battled the infection is still present and might need to be surgically removed.
Additionally, because of the scar tissue, Brady's knee doesn't have close to full mobility, the league source said. That means the process of regaining strength in his quadriceps - the most important muscle to build up after a knee injury - hasn't begun in earnest.
Which brings us back to Cassel. The Patriots can franchise the former seventh-round pick, an expensive one-year solution. They can try to re-sign him to a short-term deal, an option that Cassel will certainly find unattractive given that he stands to make $6 million-plus this offseason on the open market. The team can also turn the job over to rookie third-rounder Kevin O'Connell. Or they can just hope Brady's magnificence heals his blowed-up knee in time for training camp.
As insane as it sounds, slapping the franchise tag on Cassel seems worth the salary-cap hit. He's grown into a competent NFL QB, and for a team that is annually in the playoff conversation, it's probably worth the cost. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if Bill Belichick cut ties with Cassel and signed Vinny Testaverde and Doug Flutie. Because that's how he rolls. Or something.

How about trading Tom Brady? Matt Cassell is playing well and is much younger. No one knows how good Brady will be after the injury.

No one knows how good Matt Cassel will be next year either. While the recent history of returning knee injuries doesn't look good, neither does the history of promising quarterbacks. In this league, QB's get figured out by their sophomore year. It takes truly good QB's to continue evolving beyond what defenses do to them. We know for a fact that year in and year out, Tom Brady at least has the capacity to be a top quarterback. We do not yet know that of Matt Cassel. So as far as weighing the risk is concerned, betting on Matt Cassel is just as risky if not moreso than betting on Tom Brady's knee.

Is Ryan Wilson talking out the back side of his shorts?
The Brady family denies the rumors of a wedding or engagement. Also if Wilson has all this info from a "league source", is he just writing an article based on fiction to get an article in? Why not name the "league source". I'll wait and see when the Pats make a statement, which won't be base on rumors or un-named sources.

Keep Cassel b/c he's younger and has 2 good knees. Trade Brady as more than 1 team would trade half their draft for him. Bye Bye Brady is the way is should be.

The Patriots will franchise Cassel in 2009 because he knows the offense and he has become very comfortable in the organization. Brady should never have had the surgery in California, when some of the best orthopedic surgeons reside here in Mass. Another thing...It pisses me off that he hasnt made a single appearance on the sidelines as a player coach. He is not looking like a team player.

Send Tom Brady to the NY Jets, it's a haven for has-been quarterbacks!!! Cassell is a better quarterback for New England than "Cry-Baby Tom"

Tom Brady has done everything alot of GBs aspire to do he has nothing to prove he has a hot new soon to be wife tons of money and bragging rights so I believe his ego will let him try to get back in shape, but i think he is done and will have a horrible return and retire short after, sorry but that seems more so then him getting back to 100% even 90% which is where Mat is around compared to Brady, but who knows this back up QB could be just like Brady a back up QB who turned pro QB in one season, Mat could be too we'll see, this year could have been the year but NFL has stupid rules, I don't see how a team who has the same record as yours gets the AFC title, they should have had a tie breaker game best team wins the AFC title but another fluke to keep the Pats out, last years fluke lose to the Giants and now this years fluke lose of the AFC title, I knew the Jets were going to lose, that game meant more for the dolphins and Chad then it did to the Jets and Bret. I think the Steelers are going for number 5 for Superbowl wins. And will, they have the better team out of what is out there even with their QB hurt. So I give it to the Steelers all the way. But we will see, roo bad for the Pats I feel they were and are a better team then the dolphins and alot of teams that made it but that's NFL I guess.

Tom Brady isn't coming back, ever. He's won 3 championships, his list of NFL records is a mile long and he's getting married. Risk a lifetime disability? For what? He'll announce his retirement after the SB and the Patriots will sign Matt Cassel to a long-term deal. Keep it simple. Make it fun.
