Now that the Jets have gone down in flames and started their offseason, we can begin debating two questions in earnest. The first is whether Eric Mangini will be fired for steering the team from 8-3 to 9-7, while the second involves Brett Favre's future. The answer to the second may be contingent on the first. Jay Glazer of FOX reports today that the veteran quarterback who has made a marketing career out of being just one of the boys doesn't actually like being treated like one of the boys. According to Glazer, the quarterback is chafing at the amount of meetings and quizzes Mangini has for his team. Perhaps most damaging, Favre's play wasn't treated with any deference, unlike his days with the Packers.
With the Jets, however, the sources say that Favre has been called to what they dub "the principal's office" and grilled about making bad throws that turned into interceptions. Those same sources say this is not just done in private. Mangini will also grill Favre about his throws in front of the team, just like everybody else.Given the amount of bad throws Favre made down the stretch, it must have been a rough December.
The Jets shouldn't fall into the trap of trying to accomodate Favre. If Mangini goes, fine, but the brass must make the decision about the new coach based on all 53 players, not just one who may or may not be taking another NFL snap.

Mangini needs to go, period. He is a terrible decision maker and poor motivator.

sure, jets went from 8-3 to 9-7, but didnt they suuck last yr w/ only 3 or 4 wins? Favre got them something/somewhere didnt he? like contention for east title. Maybe it is Mangini. maybe its the O.C. (same one as last yr?) Bucs folded, Broncos folded, Cowboys choked, so the "bretts" werent alone now were they. Not every team can climb miraclously as did the 'Phins this yr, eh? speaking of which....who takes the blame for Chad Penningtons ejection from NYJ's? coaches, players, press, front office? if i were him at that press conference or better still the PA guys up in the booth for noise/special effects i'd play that toby keith country song....
"how do you like me now?"

Look for the Jets to be huge players in the Matt Cassel Sweepstakes this coming offseason. They would like nothing better than to land him as their new QB. Time for Brett to go....did you hear his pregame speech to his offense yesterday?
"If we do it, okay....if we don't, that's okay too" ....not verbatim, but the message was the same....."whatever". What type of leader tells his team "whatever"? He needs to hang them up.....he had ZERO passion going into the Miami game....ZERO.

brett, do us all a favor and retire! Nobody wants to see you stand there and cry (again) while you say how much you love your team and how beat up you are.. you just played 16 games in the nfl,so of course you are beat up! Im sure you will drag this out another 3-4 months as long as there is a camera around to catch your every tear. you have gone from one of the greatest QBs to ever play in the nfl to one of the biggest drama queens! At least if you retire, you can start a new career in soap operas!!!!!

Brett needs to go. Every coach makes bad decisions when their attempts fail. They all have balls when it works. I will agree that Mangini in inconsistant in his coaching, but when you have a Favre at the end of his career, with a loss of arm strength and inconsistant passing, it make his a very difficult quarterback to coach. Chad Pennington learned the Miami playbook in 2 months from getting there. Favre still hasn't his. Take a seat Brett. Give the job to one of the young guys (or let's trade him for Pennington).
But Mangini needs to stay to coach someone other than Favre.

Mangini...no genius here...most of the time he stands there pounding on him gum looking bewildered. With the aquisitions the team made this past offseason, he really got the least out of his players. His tenure here has been almost as embarassing as the one that is now getting shown the door in KC.
First year was new blood and a weak schedule...a few breaks and they made the playoffs. John Abraham was shipped to Atlanta and was left with a team that couldnt provide a pass rush on Black Friday at Wal-Mart. Overall did well with that idiot Edwards players. Well we though he was smart.
Second year 2007...they alienated Pete Kendall over really 100k and shipped his ass to DC. Then benched the smartest football player the Tuna has ever coached in favor of an unheard of rookie. Vilma was not thier kind a player and made his lif difficult, before the 2008 dispatch to NO, neither was Robertson. Well neither one was able to produce anything behind that crappy o-line. Not to mention the defense that couldnt provide a pass rush in a nursing home led to the NYJ secondary getting picked apart week to week. The highlight of Manginis year was spygate. The ironic part is that who the hell needed the defensive signals, they couldnt make a stop with a battalion of cops with radar guns.
Third year 2008...Going through training camp...right up to the first preseason game they wouldnt tell Pennington that he was in fact the starter, pulled the trigger on the Farve deal and released Pennington four hours before the first preseason game in hopes to prevent him on catching on somewhere, hope your all happy when you find out they gave up a first round pick for Brett the Jet. Who gets to watch Pennington on TV next week! The leading rusher in the AFC gets a whopping 10 carries in the season finale with a playoof spot on the line! While Farve throws completion after completion to Fish!Goodbye Eric! Hope Bellicheat will take you back! Goodbye Schotthemier! Goodbye Sutton! Goodbye Brett and dont expect any Jets fans at your induction in Canton!
Crappy washed up QBs considered rented saviors in green:
Neil O'Donnell
Boomer Esiason
Vinny Testaverde
Brett the Jet
Well $140M later and were still in the same place, home for New Years Day. Who are we kidding?
If Brett was hurt why the hell did he keep on going out there, I personally kept on yelling "Stay Down Please". How fitting is it to end his career with a completion to a guy wearing the other jersey!
Well here we go again Jets fans....2009 new coach, new staff, new QB. With the tough schedule on the table for next year, should be truly wonderful.
Congratulations to Chad Pennington, MVP of the AFC! A man who showed Mangenius what he can do if provided a good O-line and a running game. All while being a gentleman and a good sport about it.
I still hear Mr Hess saying, " I am 80 years old, I want to win now"!

Been a Jets fan and season ticket holder for over 30 years
My Observations....
Joe Namath sold the team's soul to the devil to win SB III - upon which they will never ever win another.
Realistically - the problem with the Jets is that they never spend any money on their coaching staffs - it is always find the cheapest guy out there - mangini - marty jr - kids who never would have gotten a job anywhere else - when the Jets did spend money on coaching ( Parcells ) look what happened
Compare that to Mangini - Edwards - Kotitie - Carroll - Walton - Groh etc etc

Matt Cassel benefits from the system he is in & the surrounding players. He plays behind one of the best offensive lines & great receivers in Moss & Welker. The only reason he is putting up all the passing stats is because the Pats depleted RB situation so they have to pass. Pennington is better & the Jets got rid of him. Any team that thinks Cassel is their saviour QB is just delaying their rebuilding program. I just hope the Lions don't get him. They have had enough bad decisions already.

well as i agree with most of whats being said here,an even bigger problem exsist why does the defensive cordinator on this team never seem to get the boot, the defense has sucked for years and this year ive seen them at there worst most of the time who truely is responsible for this this team has seen more head coach changes than my 2 yr old daughter has seen diaper changes (not really but you know) yet the defensive coordinator seams to remain,my only other factor has anyone thought that the mob is the real owner of this team and the money they make from jets losses are much greater than the wins.

I have to disagree with you on Matt Cassel at the beginning of the season I was hoping they would sign another veteran QB but as time went on he kept playing better and making better decisions with the ball and at times he pulled the ball down and ran with it good choice's when he did and a lot of times got the first down or a TD everyone has to remember the guy had not started a game since high school he looks to be more comfortable as games go on and seems to get better also I say give him one year deal and see how he does with either the Patriots ( may need him next year if rumors are true Brady may miss next season also ) or a team that has a decent offensive line and see what happens. ( a contract loaded with incentives). He may be a one year wonder but if I needed a QB he will be on my wish list if I were a GM
