I suspect it was much easier to be a Jets fan a year ago, when they were 4-12 and their playoff aspirations were dashed before Columbus Day. Now, after an offseason full of personnel moves -- none bigger than dumping Chad Pennington for Brett Favre -- New York is 9-6 and very much in the postseason discussion.
They probably should've won the AFC East a few weeks ago, but an inexplicable 1-3 record against the AFC West, and a loss to the four-win Seahawks yesterday, puts them in their current predicament. Which is why it's perfectly reasonable to think that if the Jets miss they playoffs, people might call for Eric Mangini's (figurative) head.
That it has come to this after an 8-3 start is additional evidence that Favre is simply too old to do it, and that coach Eric Mangini is in over his head and should not be retained if the Jets don't make the playoffs. ... No excuses. No explanations. He was on board with the Favre decision, and he must pay the price if the collapse is completed next week. ...I don't know if Mangini deserves to lose his job (he did take New York to the postseason in his first season, and is pretty close to repeating the feat in Year 3) but I'm not a Jets fan, either. If it comes to that, Bill Cowher has to be at the top of the list because, well, he's at the top of everybody's list.
When you lose to Oakland, San Francisco and Seattle -- teams with a combined record of 14-31 -- and go 0-4 on the West Coast against four sub-.500 teams, you don't deserve anything else. In fact, the Jets are lucky to be alive in the playoff race after their disgraceful football in the past four weeks.
And while I expect Josh McDaniels to get a few job offers this spring, the Jets front office has presumably learned their lesson about plucking names from the wilting Bill Belichick coaching tree.
I'm not convinced the Jets will make the playoffs, and maybe trading for Favre was a little short-sighted, but not many people were complaining about the move when the team was 8-3. Then again, nobody thought they would lose to the Seahawks yesterday.

Mangini is going to be a great coach, Someday. He was not ready for the job when he got it, has looked good at times and terrible at other times. The Jets need to get over their obcession with New England and establish themselves on thier own. Need I remind about Parcels, Curtis Martin, many other players, and then a coach from the New England system. Dump Mangini, he won't get better until that happens, and then establish a winning New York Jets system, not a New England Patriots copy.
goodbye mr mangini i agree you just don't have it how about someone like coach cowler drag him out of playing golf and watch what happens.
Forget about his decisionmaking during the game, Mangini should go, for letting his coordinators make a mockery of our talented team. Schottenheimer and Sutton are both in the wrong business. They have no clue about pro football. If the players could speak their minds, we would find out how poor this coaching staff really was.
Favre is showing his age. He can not move in the pocket.
His arm strength is below par. He has not or maybe can not
throw past 15-20 yards.
Jets should NOT resign him. Go with the younger quarterback.
Schoteneheimer and Sutton are from the old school.
Playing
football today, you sometimes take chances, be aggresive, like the Marlins.
Mangini should be fired,he's a terrible coach.
I go back to Namath's rookie year as a Jets fan, so I have been watching them for a long time. Last year's debacle was not the fault of any quarterback. They were in most games for the first half and then I watched both lines get blown out in the second half. That's the coaching staff not getting them as well conditioned as the other teams. This year, they have broken down in the second half of the season, again, looks like the coaching staff hasn't gotten them ready for the long haul. Why they won't draft a young quarterback to groom for the future, I don't understand. Also, I don't understand the reason for trading for a one year, at best, old quarterback like Favre. That;s the front office. So once again, it looks like back to the drawing board with a new front office and new coaching staff is the obvious choice.
If the Jets throw next weeks game to Miami, they can kill the Pats chances and keep themselves in contention for the playoffs. Not that Mangini would want to do anything to prevent NE from getting in!
PLEASE FIRE THIS MAN. he flat out can't coach. under belichick everyone looks great but, he has made bad decisions. it's not favre's fault by any means. the team lacks toughness. i stayed with the jets since parcells was there. love them to death but, he has to go, and if things go bad in kc this offseason, please bring herm back. at least his players played for him. and one other point, coles needs to stop being a baby and play ball. if pennington was throwing him the ball, he would be laying it all out there but, not for favre. BRING BACK HERM!!!!
SHUTT UPP ALL YOU JETHATERS YALL WONT HOLLERING WHEN BRETT AND JETT WERE 8-3 AHEAD NOW WE HAVE A COMPLETE LET DOWN FROM THE TEAM COACHES FANS PEOPLE CALLING FOR HEADS DAMM SHAME I THINK NO ONE KNOWS NOW MORE THAN BRETT THAT HIS TIME HAS SLIP HIM BYE BUT I WOULD LOVE TO THANK HIM AND THE JETS FOR A EXCITING TIME WHILE WE RAN THIS RACE THINK THE COACH FOR TAKEING A SHOT HAD HE BEEN RIGHT WE WOULD NOT BE HAVING THESE THOUGHTS HE DESERVES TO COOACH THE JETS A MAKE WHAT CHANGES HE LIKE LOOK AT GIANTS COACH NOW AFTER ASS WAS LEFT TO HANG DRY IT BROUGHT THE BEST IN HIM HE GOT THE BEST FROM THE GIANTS AND WE KNOW THE REST OF THIS STORY NEED I SAY MORE
Boomer Esiason said that coaches have been fired for less than what Mangini did, so I guess he's a goner. Boomer cited the fourth down bomb Favre threw to Coles, with more than two minutes to play in the fourth quarter, in favor of punting it away. IMO, the team lost the game when Mangini didn't show confidence in his squad on the fourth and one on the Seahawk's two yard line and the Jets took the field goal. That was the moment the Jets lost the game. I walked out of the room and didn't come back.
It's New York...Who cares? Nothing good ever comes out of that armpit of a rathole
The Jets' winning seasons in 2006 and 2008 can be attributed, in part, to a weak schedule based on the previous seasons' poor records. Also, the GM is clearly not suited for the job. His draft record is poor, which might be expected, since he's essentially a CPA. Ferguson is a bust, and the 2008 No. 1 pick isn't even in the rotation.
One other thing: they should go back to the 4-3. They need a pass rush.
And how come they pay so much for free agents but not pay to keep their own? I mean, I think we could have used John Abraham the past couple of seasons.
The Jets Got what they wanted and needed from Brett Farve !
Sold out Stadim And the greatest Show on Eath. I am a true Giants fan ,But I love to watch Brett Play . Instead of coach's
calling in the plays let farve run the game .He probably knows
more about the game than ManQueenie.
Mangini will never be a successful coach because he's a rat! He will forever be remembered as a rat.
