During yesterday's CBS Pregame Show, Charley Casserly's wig made its usual appearance to discuss news from around the league. It was the typical fare: so-and-so is on the hot seat, whatshisname could get make bank this offseason, blah blah blah.
But then Casserly busted out this gem: in the wake of referee Jeff Triplette getting helped to his face during last week's Bills-Jets game, there have been discussions about how to make officials safer as they wade through 22 muscle-bound meatheads for three hours every Sunday.
One possibility: equipping umpires (the poor souls who stand just behind the inside linebackers before the snap and are often target practice anytime the ball makes its way to the middle of the field) with helmets. Seriously. Casserly opines that either a baseball helmet (the two-ear-flap Mark Lemke special) or maybe even a football helmet could be part of the required uniform in 2009.
Fantastic.
I get the whole safety issue because, well, a 250-pound, 20-something linebacker running through a 180-bound, 60-year-old accountant working his part-time gig can be pretty dangerous. But the thought of some old-timer lining up in a full-on officials uniform WITH a football helmet seems ridiculous. It's hard enough to take them seriously when they're just wearing a striped shirt and baseball pants. Adding a helmet probably won't help.
Whatever comes of this, I'm guessing Garth DeFelice won't be donning a helmet anytime soon. The photo above shows DeFelice Deebo-ing the Rams' Kenneth Darby, and if you're into the whole moving-pictures thing, here ya go:

Wow,
This about sums it up, this article about the ref knocking our player down, sitting here for two weeks or so, no new news, no new articles. If we went 0-16, there would be something. I still think the Lions would have a shot at beating the 2008 Rams, the worst Ram team I ever saw, since 1976. What scares me is that Chip may keep Haslett on as head coach. I wouldn't mind giving him a second chance, everybody deserves one, but he scares me. For two reasons. 1) Chris Long is not a DE, he's a pass rushing OLB. What a waiste it was to see him play out of position this year. He is such an extraordinary young man, and talent that if Haslett or someone else keeps him out of position, he will still be good, and might start racking up more sacks, but he won't be great, and that is a damn freakin' shame! If he finished out with 5 sacks his rookie year, it would have been 10, or more if in a 3-4 scheme, what a damn shame, you keep your system in place, and the talent remains out of position, Hey, lets put Shawn Merriman, or Joey Porter down at the DE position, pass rushing specialists, what would happen?, they would be ordinary. Go back in time and put L.T at DE, or just make him an ordinary 4-3 LB, making alot of tackles like Ray Lewis, yeah, and he would have got some sacks at end, but he would not be real special, that's for sure. 2)He seemed to be transfixed on Bulger as the qb, and this really scares me, yeah, you can't blame the qb for all of that mess, but when ever the game was riding on his narrow shoulders, he choaked, and he was just "HORRIBLE", anyway. We have not had a winning season with BUlger at the helm since 2003, the you know what has finally hit the fan. If Chip does retain the team, he needs to do a fins of 2008 move, he needs to bring in someone big, no guessing, a proven winner. Don't even look at Poli, and the organization who's cheating stole our Lombardy trophy, You can't gauge if he's really good, or not if you ask me. But Chip needs a big name, once in the past Pete Carol wanted to be the coach, he asked for too much power, and Shaw balked, Carol was probably sick of being fired for other people's mistakes. Did Carol have controll over personel discisions in N.E, and NYJ? Probably not. So it looks like these guys got nerve, or big egos when they ask for total control, but thy are probably tired of getting fired for others mistakes. I think Carols worth a look, after that I would give Cowher a blank check, if not him, take a shot at Jimmy Johnson, give these men all the power, and money they want, and you know you will turn the corner. A guy like Cowher would probably not take on all personel desisions, and hire the right guys for the gm spot, and head of player personel, ect. Johnson is a master of drafting the right players, especially with lower picks, what he did in Dallas was like a work of art. Anyway, we can not afford a "Maybe Haslett will be o.k!" type of deal. We need a serious move to be made here, a "TUNA" like move. We are in shambles. Wow, we get to celebrate our "10 YEAR CHAMPIONSHIP ANIVERSARY" watching Bulger throw horrible picks, Jackson getting hurt, and bitching about stuff, Holt getting older, and 6-7" 320 lb OT's knocking Howie's son into the dirt, and all with eye sore uniforms on, wow!, can't wait! But "maybe" Haslett will be o.k. The thing that makes me feel bad writing this is Haslett seems like a good guy, and that he cares about the players, maybe if given a chance, maybe he'll make the right changes, I do wish him well. He is a man of good character, on a team filled with bad character. Imagine if Linehan could go back in time, would he have went into his final year with Bulger, Jackson, and Holt?, if he did have that kind of power, those guys would be gone, and he would have stock piled as many picks through trades as he could have. Mabye could have had Matt ryan, or Flaco at the Helm, signed Turner from the Chargers, and used picks on lineman, I don't know, well, I like Haslett personaly, but is this enough? If he remains are guy, I will suport him, and root for him. If he stays on Chris Long better start bulking up for the future, if he lifted weights alot before, think about now? He might have to start adding a few more pizzas to his diet too(still, he's only 6-3"???? ask Kevin Greene about his one season at DE, he won't want to talk about it!, believe me!!). If Bulger is still our qb, I'm going to jump off the top of the ST. Louis arch, and end all the misery allready! Scott L. Jinks(SGJINKS)
