The now 0-15 Lions have many believing that a winless season is not only possible, but probable. This is 0for08, FanHouse's eye on the Detroit Lions and their quest for a winless season. The Detroit Lions' loss to the New Orleans Saints today makes them the first team in NFL history to start a season with 15 straight losses and gets them one game away from the infamy of becoming the only 0-16 team in football history.
But more significantly for the future of the franchise, the loss assures the Lions of having the first pick in the 2009 draft.
So how will the Lions use that pick to rebuild? Draft a franchise quarterback? Or a stud offensive lineman? Or a playmaker on defense? Or trade the pick and try to stockpile talent at multiple positions?
There's no way of knowing now, because we don't even know who will make the calls in the Lions' draft room. But there's one piece of good news for the fans in Detroit: The pick will not be made by Matt Millen.

"The pick will not be made by Matt Millen."
I wouldn't be so sure of that. Millen is rumored to still be working for the Lions.

How bad can it get? As a Lions fan, I don't want to know.
As a longtime Chicago Bears fan I can sympathize with the plight that the Lions and their fans find themselves in this season. I think it was in 1971 that the Bears finished 1-13, and I can remember my grandfather and uncle's being very disturbed about that.
The Lions possibly finishing at 0-16 means a lost season for the team and the fans as well. A major restructuring of the team would have to be a priority, this would also include a coaching change as well.
That said I feel compelled to comment on a piece of sleazy commentary by Rob Parker, a member of the Detroit press.
Rod Marinelli may not be the best coach and he possibly could be the worst coach for the Detroit Lions. But I believe he tries on a weekly basis to win on Sunday's. This season to this point that hasn't happened, and if Parker were at least a competent journalist he would at least comment in a professional manner of what he observes on the field.
To that end the Lions have been nothing short of horrific on both sides of the ball, to comment on the play of the Lions and even the performance of the coaching staff would be within the bounds of respectable journalism and just plain old fashioned good taste.
A personal attack against a coach just because one doesn't get the answer that one is fishing for is off target and contrary to the collective well being of the team, the sport, and the media. To insinuate nepotism is one thing, but to add "Don't you wish your daughter married a better defensive coordinator" is a classless utterance by a classless hack. Parker should at the very least be required to issue a public apology to Rod Marinelli and his daughter.
I actually think the Lions have a shot next year:
