The 0-11 Lions have many believing that a winless season is not only possible, but probable. This is 0for08, FanHouse's eye on the Detroit Lions and their quest for a winless season. The Lions have given their fans many reasons to believe that they are on their way to a winless season, and the first half of today's Vikings game was just added evidence. Yes, Detroit may be leading 6-3 at the half, but it's hard to figure why this game isn't at least 17-3 Detroit.
It's hard to imagine a half going better for Detroit. Gus Frerotte threw two interceptions, one of which came when the ball was deflected at the line, bounced back toward Frerotte and was snagged by defensive end Corey Smith. Detroit outgained Minnesota 144-102, and had four separate drives inside the Vikings' 30 and three inside the Vikings' 10.
Of course, the Lions got only six points out of those drives because of two failed fourth-down attempts (memo to Rod Marinelli, if the Bears can't run up the middle for a key yard against the Vikings, you should know your team can't).
They also got a cheap shot on Jared Allen, saw Morran Norris ejected for throwing a punch, and knocked Frerotte out of the game with a back injury.
It was a productive half for the Lions, but if they can't put more than six points on the board with all that happening, futility seems a sure bet.
