The last time the Cardinals franchise won a division title, they played their games in Busch Stadium. They were the Saint Louis Cardinals. Coincidentally, they pasted the hapless current St. Louis team today at home to clinch the NFC West. While it was no surprise the 2008 Cardinals easily handled the 2008 Rams -- 34-10 -- let us examine how rare an occurrence this is.
- The Cardinals franchise has only finished above .500 four times since 1976.
- The Cardinals franchise has not won their division since a strike-shortened 5-4 record was good enough in 1982. In the past 25 years, the Cardinals had only made the playoffs once -- when Jake Plummer took them on a 9-7 whirlwind in 1998.
- Since moving to Arizona, the Cardinals have lost at least 10 games 13 times in 20 seasons.
I could go on and on, but you get the point. This was one futile organization. I'll admit that when covering a team who is not your favorite, you still develop some love for the team. I've been rooting for these guys to do well, and they are a likable bunch from top to bottom. To the true Arizona Cardinals fans -- who have been with the team since the beginning -- you really deserve this. Enjoy it, and hopefully it's simply the start of things to come.
As for the game itself, it was pretty much what we expected. The Rams never really had a chance. The Cardinals defense took the ball away three times, Marc Bulger was greatly outplayed by the man he unseated in St. Louis -- Kurt Warner -- and the game was never in doubt.
Steven Jackson is sure to draw the ire of his hometown fans, fumbling the ball away twice and only gaining 64 yards on his 19 carries. He's been a scapegoat this season, and that's not changing after this one. As I said above, Bulger was badly outplayed by Warner, so he'll continue to be a hometown scapegoat as well. I have to ask this question once more to Jim Haslett? Why not let Brock Berlin play? You are 2-11. Give the kid a chance to show if he can succeed at this level. He wasn't a high draft pick, but neither was Tom Brady. At least see what he can do, because there is nothing to lose at this point. You get blown out nearly every week anyway.
Moving forward, the Cardinals will look to build upon this substantial momentum. They have two tough tests in front of them before likely resting many of their regulars against Seattle in Week 17. Taking on the Minnesota Vikings at home next week should be a nice playoff primer, for they are likely to face similar level competition in the first round of the playoffs at home. The trip to New England is important for the Cards as well, because they need to prove to themselves that they can execute better in the eastern time zone. Round two of the playoffs will likely be out there, so it will be a nice boost if they play well in Foxboro.
For now, though, it's time to celebrate the rare event. Ken Whisenhunt has turned this thing around in less than two years. The Arizona Cardinals are the NFC West champions.

Thanks Matt, this feels so good. It was almost surreal watching the players and coaches celebrate. I think that the fans know that the team flatters to deceive, with the terrible state of the other three teams in the division.. today was almost like our Superbowl.

Yes the Cardinals did beat a crappy division team, but we did beat the Cowboys who were predicted to goto the Super Bowl. And at the start of the season we beat a pretty good Bills team.

The Cardinals only beat 2 teams with winning records this year the Dolphins and the Cowboys (overrated). They got beat like a drum by the Eagles, Brett & The Jets and couldn't finish off PLAYOFF teams. We'll see what happens.

Hey all I can say is I'd take a division championship by beating bad competition any day over the garbage we have here in Detroit! Be happy to have a competitive, entertaining, PLAYOFF team!

Wow, such harsh comments for the Cardinals...no mention that they haven't won their division in 31 years. Gee, is it too much for Cards fans to be happy of their accomplishments this year. They have completely turned around from a losing team to finally winning. The only fact that matters is that they did win games! If you want to compare who won against who this season...go down the whole line. Don't just pick on the Cards. I don't recall anyone saying they were the best team but why not let them bask in the glory of what they have done so far???
It's easy to become a fan of the best team, but it's so much better to be a fan of a team that is making history for themselves!!

I am not knocking the Cardinals success this season they have a very good offense, fast defense and they've taken advantage of the weakest division ever, but Jessica to say "The only fact that matters is that they did win games!" is a bit of a stretch if they win games they could have beat the Panthers, Redskins, Giants, Jets...I can go on. A team that wins games wins in the 4th quarter they must finish teams off! My coach always told me "Start fast, control the tempo and finish hard!" That goes for both sex and football!
Go Panthers!

I have lived in AZ my whole life and the only time I root for the Cards is to lose. I am not knocking the success that AZ has had this year they have an explosive offense, a good defense but to say "The only fact that matters is that they did win games!" is a stretch. If they win games they should have beat the Panthers, Giants, Jets, Redskins and I can go on. The Cards have improved but with the exception of the Jets the 3 teams listed above RUN the ball well and the Cards do not play well on the road, run the ball well or tackle well all key elements when playing outside the BIG Toaster!

Actually, I completely stand by what I said..last I checked I am
entitled to my opinion whatever it may be, as are you. I don't recall saying they were the best team in the NFL, they went from winning NO GAMES to finally winning games. And I correct myself, 33 years since winning division so yes, I could care less at this point who they win against. If they had been making the playoffs every year, then maybe I might see the point you are trying to make. They played some strong teams but they only lost to your Panthers by 4 points. To compare them to such great teams is a cheap shot, and not all were complete blow-outs. It must feel good to knock down a team that has been down for so long. By the way, I didn't see the Redskins, Jets, or Giants win on Sunday....point being, ALL teams win AND lose against good AND bad teams every season, this one included! I have nothing bad to say about any team, we all support who we choose and hope they do well...that's why its called a sport!! I hope the Cards continue to become stronger and improve every year, whoever they play and whoever they win against!
And thank you DQ, I completely understand!
