The defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants have sent a powerful message about what kind of football team they are today, banishing their most talented wide receiver, Plaxico Burress, and saying they'll try to repeat as Super Bowl champions without him.
In announcing that Burress will be suspended for the rest of the season and placed on the non-football injury list after accidentally shooting himself, Giants coach Tom Coughlin tried to sound a compassionate note:
"When you lose a player of Plaxico's ability, it is incumbent that everybody step up and fill the void," Coach Tom Coughlin said. "In the last two seasons, this team has done an outstanding job of that. We made it clear to Plax today that we are here to support him in any way possible."But the reality is that the Giants are fed up with Burress, and they won't tolerate any individual player who detracts from the team as a whole. This is Tom Coughlin's team, and anyone who can't get with Tom Coughlin's program will be sent packing.

Finally, someone has shown some integrity in the sports world. Now if ESPN and the rest of the sports reporting folks would only follow suit.

There are positive and negative reasons whyTom Coughlin had to banish Plax, either way you think about it, it was nessasary. The Giants are on their way to making franchise history, the less controversy, and distractions to the orginization, the better!

Somewhere along the line the NFL has got to get into the standard contract that there is zero tollerance for any untoward behavior.
Our kids are growing up and seeing these inmature millionaires get away with any and everything. They start to think they can to.
NFL= not for long if it doesn't clean house.

The Giants stop the on slaughter of poor behavior by NFL players. The Cowboys and Jerry Jones's band of hoodlums will change that once again. Take the team away from Jones and make the NFL once again a league our children can admire

If all teams (are you listening Jerry?) handled hoodlems and thugs whose lives revolve around "clubs" rather than their wives and families, like the Giants and Titans have, the league would set a much better example for the kids who aspire to be NFL players.

Fan,
You still worried about Eli Manning's performance and ability to lead the Giants? Your post from pre-season about your doubts about him were hilarious. I trust we can put that to bed. The running backs come and go, the receivers come and go but the glue is Manning.

if someone were to have held up plax, he most likely would not have needed a gun as plax would have blown his own foot off while defending himself.
it sounds as though he has no experience w/any kind of guns, if he had he would not have been showing it (his gun) off at the club!
so long plax!

Tough love for Plax. This organization cares enough for this player to do it. Even if he never comes back as a Giant he will thank them for this if he is to get himself on the straight and narrow.

The team didn't fire him, the league didn't suspend him and no one cancelled his contract. This isn't a "punishment" or a "banishment", its just a logicalbusiness decision made by the Giant's management. Burress obiviously isn't going to be in any shape to play football this year so placing him on the non-football injury list is both a smart move and one that any team would make in this situation. It doesn't mean he won't be on the team next year if his legal issues are resolved.

PLAX SHOULDVE KNOWN HE WAS ON A SHORT STRING ANYWAY..THIS TEAM IS TOO DEEP IN EVERY POSITION TOO WORRY ABOUT PLAX AND HIS OFFTHEFIELD FOLLIES..HE HELD OUT FOR MORE MONEY IN THE OFFSEASON HE GETS HIS CONTRACT AND THIS IS THE WAY HE PAYS HIS EMPLOYER BACK ..A SAD END TO HIS CAREER AS A GIANT ..THEY PROBABLY WONT MISS HIM ANYWAY AS GIANTS ARE TEAM BLUE NOT PLAX`S TEAM!!

you write this like the giants made some sort of profound move. i'm pretty sure that this is exactly the type of move that any professional organization would make if they had an employee with minimally 3.5 years hanging over his head. this isn't by any means making a statement. its simply making the only choice possible.

Don't worry about Plax - Jerry Jones will sign him. Might even sign Vick as Romo's back-up. Biggest personell expenses will be for bodyguards to save these players from themselves.
There are a lot of NFL players spending their off field time working positively in their communities - surely wish those stories made headlines

Hello old friend....I had to go back to our old posts to remember what you were referring to. I have to say that you were correct and Eli has done a great job this year. Of course, as is usually the case, it's a total team effort, bolstered by an excellent job from the FO which allows the G-Men to lose a Plaxico and still have enough personel to win.
I am the most amazed by the transformation in Coughlin. People who are not impressed with this should consider how hard it is to change our demeaner as completely as he has.
