I'm pretty sure the NFL Collections Department might make an example out of Steelers safety Ryan Clark. Late in the third quarter, with Pittsburgh leading 23-10, Clark leveled a defenseless Wes Welker, who would stagger to the sidelines and not return to the game. In fairness, "defenseless" doesn't begin to describe what happened; it was about a bazillion times worse than that.
Clark was rightly flagged for unnecessary roughness on the play, and there's a great chance he becomes the first player to incur a seven-figure fine*, courtesy of Commissar Goodell. That Clark was penalized for a similar transgression earlier this season against the the Jags' Matt Jones probably doesn't help his case.
On the upside, at least he didn't try to honor Sean Taylor while violating the league's dress code, so there's that.
* I'm kidding, but, frankly, it wouldn't surprise me, either.

Sorry, sport, but this is football. I'm sure Clark will be fined, but the hit he made was perfectly legal (hit with the shoulder, one foot still on the ground at contact). Had the ball not been tipped, it would have been a perfectly timed hit to separate the receiver from the ball. Just because Clark didn't see the tip and somehow change his momentum to take himself out of a collision course with Welker, doesn't make this a dirty or illegal hit. Don't let Goodell's vision of a "let's play flag football so we can squeeze another couple games onto the schedule and make more money" cloud the notion of what real football is.

Give me a break! I like hard hits as much as the next guy, but this hit was a clear cheapshot. Welker knew the ball was tipped, put his arm down and pulled up. The DB just saw a chance to "light him up" and hit him high. It might be great for ESPN, but it is still a dirty play. Fine him and move on. This is a disturbing pattern from the Steelers. Hits on Palmer, Rivers and now Welker. Just remember, what goes around, comes around.

First off you must be a steelers fan. Second, that was a bulls#*! hit and you know it. Not only was that hit bad he has a prior record.for doing the same thing earlier in the season. Yeah this is football and it should be played at 100% intesnsity but not at the potential cost of someones health/career! Hits like that are meant to end careers and injury players.

Looks like Wes Welker finally got what was coming to him. Kudos to you, Ryan Clark.

This was a clean hit. If you look at the instant replay in slow motion, Clark hit Welker before the tipped ball hit the ground. The play was not over and the hit was completely legal. If Clark is fined for this hit then you should fine about half the league for the hits that occur every week on kick returns.

Hmmm... How about that, sports fans! Not only will there be no fine or suspension, but per the head of officiating himself, the flag shouldn't have even been thrown. Just like what all of the rational football fans have been saying all along...

Well, Well, Well, a lot of people seem upset that Clark made a great hit on Wes Welker. We as fans see these hits all the time, but the time that it happens to someone on our team, we are displeased. I mean come on, there was nothing wrong with the hit....except that.......Well, Welker might want to think twice about going across the middle of the Steel Curtain. Good job to the commish, for not giving Clark a fine, because there was nothing cheap nor dirty about it. Its called football. I'm pretty sure the dress code for football games is matching helments, uniforms, and pads, and not ballerina outfits and tap shoes. If you can't take the hits, then stay on the bench, better yet, quit. YOu make a few million a year.....for the league and fans sake.....Suck It Up.

What ever happened to good clean tackling. Pro football has become a violent sport, and I think Goodell is trying to stop some of it. Look what happened to Arizona Cardinals receiver Bouldin a couple of months back. He wound up with about 40 screws in his jaws. What was legal about that hit. In my opinion when a player makes a hit like that on a receiver, or whoever, he ought to be thrown out of the game, pay a hefty fine, and set out at least two games with no pay. That might teach them a lesson.

Umm, football has always been a violent sport. Look at some footage from the 70's or before - those hits were violent and would be illegal in today's version. It was a hard hit, meant to separate receiver & ball and thus prevent the advancement of the ball by the offense (much how Holmes got hit last week btw, or Heath got hit today, or Hines got hit 2 weeks ago). Did Clark know the ball was tipped? Maybe. Does he know Welker is an unbelievable athlete and could have made a play on the ball even though tipped? Absolutely. When Steelers played the Colts a few weeks ago, Reggie Wayne caught a TD ball that was tipped b/c the safety didn't take him out of the play after the tip. Clark I'm sure was not going to let that happen again.
This is football, its violent and Clark's objective was to ensure the tipped ball did not end up in Welker's hands. Mission accomplished.
For those of you who say "what comes around goes around", watch any Steelers game - our receivers are getting lit up almost every game. Our QB has some of the most violent hits against him of any QB in the league the last few years - any of those get penalized? Get a grip people - this is freakin' football - there are straps on the helmet for a reason.

What happened to Wes Walker would have never happened to Hines Ward because he is always concentrated on the game Wes should know better that the play does not end until the ref says so therefore it was his mistake to think that every one is going to stop their assignment. Your comment also tells me that you have never been to a football game to see how fast the game is that is practically impossible for any one to stop their momentum. If you look at replay and you think that was intentionally done. The hit against the Jones from the Jaguars was also legit and that is the nature of the game. Receivers should always be paying attention and never keep their guard down.

Chicken $hit - cheap $hot! There's absolutely no excuse for trying to end a man's career. Reminds me of Jack Tatum / Daryl Stingley. $$$$ is what it's gonna cost him. He deserves payback.

Ending a career? yea that's pretty extreme. Not sure if you ever played football before but it's suppose to be violent, hince the reason you sign a wavier. Did he lead with his helmet NO he hit with his shoulder first. Not cheap ball got deflected. If Welker would have made the catch or the ball wasn't tipped this wouldn't be a topic. You must be a fan of Goodell! Let's fine everyone!

"What?!? We're only going to score 17?!? HaHaHaHa, Come on!"
Answer - What did Tom Brady say just before being held to 14 total points in the Super Bowl.
Bonus question: What historical event did this mark?
Answer: The beginning of the end for Brady, Belicheck, and the Patriots.
Off topic? Absolutely! But this team and it's fans spouted so much crap last year that I just can't resist the opportunity to remind everyone.

It was a good hit, unfortunately i'm sure he'll be fined for it and it'll prob be a big one. I'm not one to complain a lot but Roger Goodell is the worst thing that has happened to the NFL. It's a joke what he is turing this league into. Quit worrying about taking the damn games/league internationally and focus on satisfying the players and fans that have supported the league for over 40 years. Grow Up Goodell and get off your high horse... WHAT A PRICK!!! GO STEELERS!!!

If that draws a "seven-figure fine" I'm done with the NFL. It was a brutal hit, but it was perfectly legal. Defenders already have to treat quarterbacks as if they're in a flag footbal league. What's next? Making defensive backs say "May I?" before they can level a receiver?

Legal?? Look at the video again...was Welker still attempting to catch the ball or were his arms down and walking away? Give me a break.....the refs got it right and so won't Goodell when he fines his a**.

Yeah... that shouldn't warrant a fine. If it was golf, sure, but this is football! People are supposed to get hit! If you get hit like that it sucks, but it's part of the game.
