With news surfacing today that Romeo Crennel could be out of a job at the end of the season (I'll wait for you to regain the feeling in your knees), some of his players have defended the "head coach" even though, you know, he isn't very good.Crennel has coached the Browns for four straight seasons, and has just one winning record (10-7 in 2007) to go along with two seasons where he combined to win 10 games (6-10 in '05, 4-12 in '04). This season, Crennel had basically the same personal but has won just four games thus far, with only one of those coming against a potential playoff team.
I guess you can disregard any of those pesky "stats" when talking about him as a coach, as his players don't want him gone.
"It's not the coach's fault," Shaun Smith said. "It's the player's fault. You can't say he's losing the locker room. We have to hold ourselves accountable."While you have to love the commitment here by the players for Crennel, they are basically just saying the right things when it is obvious a coaching change is needed. Romeo decided to bench Derek Anderson three weeks ago for Brady Quinn, yet pulled the second-year quarterback this past week, making Boy Wonder a little peeved with the coach.
"We are going to do everything we can to fight for Romeo," Sean Jones said. "We have to play as a team, because it's a team game."
If that isn't enough, his group of players continue to fail at the simple tasks asked of professional football players, like catching the football if you're a receiver and, similarly, catching the football if you're a tight end.
From all we can see, Crennel seems like a great guy off the field and we would never knock him personally, but as a football coach he's stunk and needs to be replaced so the Browns can move on. That or they could keep him and continue to lead the league in staph infections. I wonder if there is a coaching bonus involved with that?

Absolutely it is the players, but the job of the head coach is to
get the best from those players by motivating them. Romeo
is a nice guy and frankly that just does not cut it in the NFL!
Winslow should have been benched, fined and read the riot act for his antics this year. Look at what Parcells and Sparano
have done this year in Miami-they will not put up with ANY crap,
and God help you if you are not giving 100%. I hate to say it
but some needed toughness is missing from Romeo and the team is quickly moving backwards.

I don't really know whether Romeo Crennel should be replaced, but to imply that Crennel's coaching has anything to do with a Pro Bowl receiver's inability to hold on to perfectly catchable passes is the height of idiocy, and a perfect example of why so many don't take blogging even remotely seriously. Does he also have something to do with staph infections? And now some concern is being raised that Brady Quinn's finger is more serious than realized, but again, Crennel's the idiot for pulling him in the second half of a close game where he was playing putridly? None of that makes an ounce of sense.
So last year Crennel was a good coach who brought a bunch of guys no one had even heard of to the brink of the playoffs, despite a weak defense and having to pull the opening day starter after game one. This year he stinks. Makes sense.

Have to agree completely with comments by PFS: there is far too much scapegoating of Crennel going on in Cleveland for the mistakes of others. Of course, that is a long and smelly sports tradition, but just a moment's reflection would tell you that the head coach is not to blame for locker room staph infections, nor for allowing his star qb to suit up when he wanted to play through what was described as a minor injury.
