The Jets are 7-3, lead the AFC East, and are perfectly positioned for a return to the postseason after a four-win effort a year ago. So, naturally, we're talking about ... whether Brett Favre will return for 2009? Really? The New York Post's Brian Costello writes that for as wonderful as last Thursday's overtime victory over the Patriots was, Jets fans shouldn't get used to the idea of having Favre around forever. Apparently, he really will retire one of these years. I'm skeptical.
"I haven't even thought about it," Favre said when the prospect of playing in 2009 came up. "I have people - friends, family - who ask me all the time about next year. The answer I give them, which is the honest answer, is I really don't know. To be totally honest with you, I really don't care. What I care about is trying to beat Tennessee."Amazingly, Favre does admit that he can't play forever, which should come as news to Ted Thompson, Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers. And even though the Jets acquired Favre with the understanding that it could be a one-and-done situation, depending on how the rest of the season plays out, it might well be worth it.
Of course, if New York misses the playoffs and Miami makes it (or even if the Dolphins don't and they win eight or nine games), then, well, the fans and media (obvious exceptions: Peter King, Tony Kornheiser, John Madden) could feel differently.
Prior to the Jets-Pats game, I wrote that the Dolphins made out best in the Favre trade, and I still feel that way. Certainly that could change, particularly if Favre decides to return next season. We should know more by next August. Early September at the latest.

According to the Jets GM, Favre is under contract for two more years after 08-09.
I wonder if the gunslinger will torture NY fans like he alienated half of Wisconsin?

Even a big fat jerk has to admit that Brett Favre is one of the all time greatest quarterbacks, and besides what was so great about the Jets? I do believe this is the best year they have had in a while!

I honestly cannot stand Brett Favre, and it makes me grind my teeth even to think it, but I have to say, the man is adaptable and is willing to be coached.
In his last few years in Green Bay, the offense changed its identity and was built more towards the run. After throwing too many stupid interceptions, he was successfully put in check by the new coaches in Green Bay and his decision-making improved (until the NFC championship game).
When he got to the Jets, he admitted that he was winging it and had some fun out there, throwing tons more interceptions in the process. Then he got coached down and let himself get more in sync with another running-oriented game plan.
I'm sure he's just itching to throw another bomb and try to "make things happen" downfield. And I hope he does this frequently against the Titans this weekend. But he's impressed me in the past month or so.

You know Ben, it's idiots like you who know nothing about football especially where Brett Favre is concerned. Iv'e been a packer fan all my life and have followed Brett with the Packers and now the Jets. In 2006 Brett was without 11 starters through the season and they went 4-12. Without running backs, wide receivers and tight ends, Brett did not complain and continued to try and win games. He also said in the end of that year that the Packers were starting to be a talented team and everyone laughed at him. No need to comment on the 2007 season except that Brett broke every record in the NFL. Ted Thompson and McCarthy had nothing to do with his and the teams performance. Without Brett they wouldn't have reached 13-3. Brett made Driver, Gennings and new rookie James into what they are now. Ask Jevon Walker who left the Packers for more money and has not performed well since leaving Brett. His leadership and passing with the Jets has been superb this year. What you need to do is realize that Farve is the No. 1 QB in the NFL and it will be a long time before anyone catches up to his records. If you win games and are successful, it doesn't matter how many interceptions you throw. So Ben, get another life and pick a different sport.

I agree with Dick, when a team loses it is all about the quarterback throwing interceptions. When a team wins its a team effort. What a fopa. Do you honestly think that he throws the ball away for fun? If no one on the offense is blocking or getting where they belong then is that the quarterbacks fault to?
I think not! Brett Favre is a very talented man and a hell of an athlete especially at 39 years of age. He is also a role model for kids. He has more playing ability in his big toe than most could ever wish for!
Hater!

I honestly can't stand people asking favre what he plans to do next year when he still has a big chunk of this year left.
It should be against the law to start asking Favre at this point what his plans are for next year. I liked his "I don't care. I am focused on the Titans." The press should leave him alone on this issue and let him work it out with Jets management. I hope Mangini makes the question off limits, just like talking about injuries.
As HOF as Favre has been, he has morphed in the last three games into an even better QB. He is not about big throws and high stats. He is about leading a well oiled machine down the field and using his considerable talent to bring out the best in his O line so they do what they do best and score. This adjustment is, to me, one of the most remarkable things Favre has ever done.
IMHO Favre will get the Jets to the playoffs and come back next year for the SB. Who knows, maybe they will make it that far this year. I do think this weekend will be a battle but they will beat the Titans.

Dick, Brett threw 29 interceptions the year before McCarthy came on. He said he worked with Brett on his decision-making, and lo and behold, his interceptions went down to 18 and 15.
Then Brett comes to the Jets and throws 11 picks in his first 7 games. After this, it is made public that Mangini had a talk with him on changing his decision-making. The result: 1 interception in the last 3 games.
I see a trend.
And I am so sick of this stuff about how injuries to other players are related to Brett throwing picks. How many guys were banged up on the Pats in the past few years? You didn't see Brady throwing one up on a prayer. The best quarterbacks know that if there is not a receiver to catch the ball, the ball should not be thrown.

Ben, Favre's huge mistakes in the NFC title game? He threw a single interception, but also 250+ yards and two touchdowns. Even his interception, though heartbreaking, was understandable. It was an obvious passing third down in overtime, and the on fire Giants defense knew it. The game wouldn't have been in overtime if the Packers defense had held the Giants earlier in the fourth.
I hate this whamby pamby pin the quarterback for small mistakes crap. The Packers wouldn't have even been in overtime to lose it if Favre hadn't have marched them down the field for a field goal. The Packers defense still almost lost it, letting the Giants march down the field only to miss a field goal in the wind, something they did again in overtime. Terrible defense that game, you can't pin that loss on a "disatorous game" by Favre.
