Hey, look at that: it's Ty Law, the Daunte Culpepper of the New York Jets. That's right, Law, the former Patriots Pro Bowl cornerback who also played for the Jets and Chiefs, has been out of football since January ... until today.
With the Battle for AFC East Supremacy on the schedule for this Thursday, the Jets have signed Law to take on those evil-doing New England Patriots. I can't imagine what sort of shape he's in; even if Law's been working out during the last 10 months, it's not like he was exactly in top form when he left the game.
I suppose a really good defensive coordinator can find role for a 275-pound cornerback/nose tackle hybrid, and that's now Bob Sutton's burden to bear.
According to NFL.com's Adam Schefter, the Jets plan to roll Law out for this week's game, even though he'll have had less than a week to learn the scheme.
"This is going to be different playing Thursday night against the Patriots, matching up against my former team and the players I'm used to practicing against," Law said as he was packing in Boston to drive to New York only to return to Boston again on Wednesday.Earlier this decade, Law was one of the league's best cornerbacks and regularly tormented Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. During his 13-year career, Law has 52 interceptions, and 57 passes defended, but at 34, he's not the player he once was. That said, if Hank Poteat can carve out an NFL living, Law should be fine.
"I know they're going to throw at me, but I welcome the challenge - bring it. I got the tricks for you."

C'mon, Ryan. We all know Law is only there to give the Jets' young corners a few extra pointers on the Pats' offensive tendencies -- and this is a reach, because he hasn't been inside the Pats' locker room for a while. If they actually try to put Law out there against Moss or Welker, he'll get smoked.

I like this addition. He adds extra depth to the corner and safety position. I really like it if he splits time with Abram Elam who has been playing well. And he can mentor the younger players especially Derelle Revis who he has known for a long time.

aztecaporvida, how old are you? signing Law is just an act of desperation by Mangini. He is so desperate to beat Belechick. Sad really. He may get his win, the Pats are pretty depleted from injuries. surprised the NY papers did not print a big YAHOO!! when Adalius broke his arm, like they did with Brady. YAHOO!!! one of the best qb's in the league is out for the season. Such class. Hey Jets, how about instead of hoping teams will lose players and get worse so you can beat them, how about you actually aspire to get better and beat them at their best?
