Daunte Culpepper Chooses Detroit Lions Over Re-Retirement, Not Clear Why

The flirtation has turned into a full-fledged love affair. That's right, people, after working out with the team earlier this week but leaving without signing a contract, Daunte Culpepper, recently unretired, is officially a Detroit Lion. How this is better than being unemployed is still unclear.

In any event, Culpepper, the former Vikings Pro Bowl quarterback who hasn't been the same since a serious knee injury in 2005, will join the illustrious Dan Orlovsky and Drew Stanton in Detroit. In recent years, he's hawked his wares in Miami and Oakland, and had an opportunity to sign as a backup in Green Bay this season before choosing retirement.

And now Culpepper's back, which is worth at least one half-hearted Jim Zorn-inspired "hip hip hooray!?"

I'll wait.

So what does this mean for the 0-7 Lions? Well, as best I can tell, nothing. They'll still continue to stink, even though Culpepper is now the best quarterback on their roster. (He doesn't embarrass the coaches AND he knows what that big white stripe in the back of the end zone means!)

But, really, at this point, it's all about hope. And that, along with a fair share of fumbles and interceptions, is what Culpepper offers.
Culpepper agreed Saturday to a two-year deal with the Detroit Lions. Terms of the deal, scheduled to be signed on Monday, are unknown. ... In agreeing to a deal with Culpepper, the Lions have a quarterback to help finish this season and take them into next season. Culpepper, a former Vikings starter, has great knowledge of the NFC North.
Which means, I suppose, that the Lions won't need to consult Brett Favre the next time they face the Packers.
