I understand desperate times call for desperate measures and whatnot, and it's inconceivable that things could get much worse for the Detroit Lions -- even if they re-hired Matt Millen to play offensive line. But even with the organization wallowing in its own wretchedness, this idea, proposed by mlive.com's Tom Kowalski, is, well, mental. Lions insider Tom Kowalski doesn't think imprisoned quarterback Michael Vick is the perfect solution to Detroit's quarterback controversy, but he does think the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback might be worth a look.Kowalski also added: "Vick's biggest problem when he was playing before was that his ego was out of control, he thought that the way he played the game was right, he had no humility to him at all ... After what he's gone through, my guess is he would appreciate the NFL and the opportunity to play football a lot more and might actually study the game plan and work on his technique - so why not take a shot?"
"I know the old Lions would never consider it, but you never know with the new Lions that they may think outside the box a little more - I think it's worth a shot."
I agree; he'd probably appreciate another chance to play professional football, but his biggest problem wasn't that his "ego was out of control," it was that he completed roughly 50 percent of his passes. And for all his elusiveness, he took a ton of sacks. His ego was seventh or eighth on the list of reasons why things didn't work out the first go-round, somewhere after PUPPY MURDER.
Vick should be out of the clink next summer, and while there are sure to be NFL teams interested in his services ("Adam" Pacman Jones got second, third, fourth and fifth chances, after all), I can't imagine it'll be as a quarterback.
Ron Mexico's best bet might be to study up on the games of Antwaan Randle El and Brad Smith, two athletically gifted college quarterbacks who made the successful transition to NFL wide receiver. Multi-threat Vick would create all sorts of problems for defenses, much more so than having him sit in the pocket firing incompletions all over the yard.
But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. First things first: he's got to get out of the joint. A little advice, Mike: don't let your brother drive you home.

If George Bush were trying to play quarterback in the NFL, that would be a noteworthy argument. But at this point it just makes you look very...Ron Mexican, for lack of a better term.
Yeah, there are a ton of issues more important than puppy killing. But this is a blog about a particular sport. A particular athlete in that sport. And a particular athlete in that sport that - drumroll please - killed puppies. So..Obama is important. Iraq is important. But in this blog? It's called a red herring.
Facts are, in addition to his performance issues, he has some serious character issues. These don't just "disappear", something Adam Jones continues to make obvious. The guy killed animals. Illegally. That's a moral and legal issue that cannot be overlooked for a business franchise that is the average - no, EVERY - sports team in America.
So no..don't settle down. Get a clue.

I think that once a man serves his time, he should get another chance. If he falls on his face so be it. Many called for him to go to prison and that our system, so lets be fair after his time is served the matter is settled. I would love to see Mike Back.

What did the Lions do wrong to deserve Vick? They have enough problems as it is now without adding this loser to the mix.

I agree with Ted. Once you've paid for your crime, you should be able to get back into society. granted, there may initially be some scrutiny, but after some probationary period Micheal Vick should allowed to get back to the normal business at hand....Football!! He should get back into team play, try to be a good role model to kids, which may involve some public awareness and community speaking to let youngsters know the bad and ugly about dogfighting!!! As to which team his talents would best serve.....I think the Minnesota Vikings would benefit the most. What a backfield!!! Good Luck Michael Vick!!

I could see this happening. Ron Mexico will be reformed without a doubt. He has paid his debt to society. My one big ? is where does it say that to be a great football player you need to be a great person. I am very against what he did, and I personally don't think he should ever get the chance to play again, but I know what puts butts in the seats and he is a lighting rod to put any struggling franchise back on the map, after loosing Roy Williams, if they made moves to get vick it just wouldn't surprise me

Which would be worse, sitting in jail or being the qb for the lions? The real question is......is there any difference? I would see it as a continuation of Vick's punishment!

I agree. As long as he can continue to electrify, someone somewhere will sign him. While I agree his QB skills are subpar, he is a name that generates excitement. Excitement generates revenue, and revenue is all anyone cares about. How many NFL players have had serious "run ins" with the law and continued to play?
Jamal Lewis, Ray Lewis, Michael Irvin, Ricky Williams, most of the Bengals, Tank Johnson, Pacman Jones, Derrick Thomas, Dexter Manley...I could go on and on, but why?
If you're "good" and you make the organization money, there will be a place for you in the NFL regardless of your history.

The only reason Michael Vick would sign a one year contract with the Lions would be to showcase his ability to other teams. After one season he would be gone. That is NOT what the Lions need.

Football is the American sport. I don't want it covered in animal blood. I hope he never plays for the NFL again. He should be forgiven, but not given a second chance.

The lions can't get any worse with Vick he is an upgrade over the QB they have now. Vick will at least run forward for a touchdown not backwards for a saftey. The dogfighting is never going away and it might be real tough for a team to sign him, the public backlash is gonna be strong as hell. With help from Favre they should beat the Pack by 2011. Just kidding

Hey everybody, I'm a huge supporter of the ASPCA, and all animal rights. What Mike did was wrong, and hard to forgive. I'm also a lions fan, living in Kalamazoo. While i don't think he's the guy we need on our team to make the necessary improvements (neither is Dante "the loveboat" Culpepper), i do think there may be a place for Vick in the league. However, in order for a team to ward off some public backlash, Vick himself would have to be heavily committed to giving back $$$ to raise awareness about animal cruelty. He can't be punished forever, and giving him a chance to earn his old job back might enable him to give back to the animal community. Plus i'm still pretty angry about his crime, so i want to see his a$$ driven into the ground and pummelled around a bit more... for good reason.
