The San Francisco 49ers have fired head coach Mike Nolan. After reports surfaced today that he would be fired after the weekend, team officials decided not to wait and he has been fired already, Jay Glazer of Fox is reporting.
At his press conference this afternoon, Nolan answered a question about his job security by saying, "I am the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers." Shortly after saying that, he was fired.
Assistant head coach Mike Singletary, the former Chicago Bears linebacker, is expected to be the 49ers' new interim head coach.
Nolan leaves San Francisco with a career record of 18-37. He is the third head coach to be fired this season, following Lane Kiffin in Oakland and Scott Linehan in St. Louis.

Amazing how the coach always gets the ax, especially when he has a bunch of no talent slugs playing for him like this one had.

For obvious reasons Nolan has worn his welcome as the Niners head coach. Bad challenge calls, questionable play calling. He knew it was coming but took with a grain of salt because of his dad. It just goes to show that not everyone has job security. As you look at the past I'm sure we would all agree of the greatest Niners coach ever the former Bill Walsh. I can say he had a nitch for finding the talent...except for maybe Jake the Snake. Who never made it to this organization. thank goodness. GOOD LUCK NOLEN!! I'm sure we will see you in the future somewhere.

you can't make chicken salad out of chicken shit. i am a 49er fan, the five guys on the offensive line could not block three the other day what a damn shame. the defense is in as soon as the ball gets there. if that is the best they have, tina palen should be coach

Geez...what happened to the days where teams waited until the offseason to fire their coaches?? That's, what, three in the last month? First Kiffin, then Linehan, now Nolan.
Nolan never seemed like a good coach to me. Granted, he never had much to work with in Frisco, but there's something that's very off-putting about a guy that insists on dressing in a full-blown suit for every home game. Detached, much? For God's sake, man, he looked less like a coach and more like a guy that's trying to coach the team rather than just leaving it alone and staying the heck in the front office...
Like that other guy...just across the bay...
It didn't help Nolan that he bowed into Martz's demands to start 'his' QB in JTO. JTO probably wouldn't do badly with any kind of time to work with, but what does it say that JTO was let go by the Lions, who instead kept Dan "I-don't-remember-where-the-hell-the-back-of-the-end-zone-is" Orlovsky? Let's face it - Martz's man-crush might have prevented the best man from starting at QB for the 49ers. Shaun Hill, who started a few games for the Niners last year, just flat-out won. It wasn't always a thing of beauty, but at the end of the day, a "W" was on the scoreboard. That's what you need from a QB. He doesn't always have to know the system like the back of his hand - and that's not all that makes a good QB. JTO has no idea how to be a leader because he cooled on the bench for too long for most players to have much respect for him. Shaun Hill should have been starting.
In any case, let's move on to Nolan's replacement...
"Samurai" Mike. Boy, if anybody can light a fire under a team's collective backside. If nothing else, Mike Singletary will look straight at you until you do it right.
I'm not saying that the entire NFL should be quaking in fear...but the Seahawks (who have owned the Niners in the last several years), at least, might have something to be concerned about. Mike Singletary strikes me as less of a Tom Cable and more of a Jim Haslett, if you get my drift.

i never disliked nolan but i will say as soon as i heard the news i pumped my fists and let out a loud hell yea because this team needed a stirring. but, martz needs to go more than nolan did.
but anyways im replying really because i really feel that the intensity that singletary played with will surely show in his coaching. he's well respected and a mean streak i think is what this team needs the most right now. this guy has a chance of being a gr8 coach be it he gets rid of martz and jt hopefully sooner than later, i almost cried when martz was hired and no it wasn't from happiness or cutting onions, it was because i knew he would take one of the best backs and eliminate him from the offense what a shame i can't believe that we would hire anyone fired by the lions

the san francisco 49ers have never been the same since eddie d. left, they fired my brother bronco for no good reason, a wrongful termination, and he sued them and won for slander. the oakland raiders are the same thing fired my dad frank and he then sued them and won. both the bay area teams, the raiders and 49ers have the worst ownership/generalmanager/upper brass in the nfl, and insist on blaming their Head Coaches. It is the ownership and top brass that need to go in these organizations, both of them, and neither team will be winners again, until the ownership of the al davis and yorks are removed, they are the cancers of both these organizations, not the Head Coaches, mark my word.

Nolan should have worried less about wearing a suit and more about getting his team ready to play.

Finally understanding that J T O's initials actually stood for Just Turn Overs maybe we can realize that the quarterback is supposed to put us in a positon to win, not to LOSE the games. Now to see how the defense will respond and how Martz will react. Obviously the new coach has a SINGLETARY motive to WIN. Lets go niners

i wonder if smith, now that nolan is gone would be more willing to return, be it that hopefully martz will be gone. this guy hasn't had the oppurtunity to perform in a one offense and even than with the dif. offenses has been injured. i really think this kid needs to be evaluated further in an offense he's familiar with. i just hope jt continues to throw picks in the red zone so he, and marts will be escorted out of town also.
