It happened to the NBA. A pure, physical, exciting game both up and down the floor became one of flops and ejections and weak fouls. The game lost the hard foul and the brick wall screens and it's now more about the shooting guard than the power forward. The same thing might be happening to the NFL and one player, rarely quoted Steelers safety Troy Polamalu, has had enough of it. Yesterday, the hard-hitting defensive back said that all these new fines and rule changes have softened a pure game, going as far as calling the sport "a pansy game."
Strong safety Troy Polamalu said football "just loses so much of its essence when it becomes like a pansy game."A lot of the uproar from Steelers camp is over the recent fines handed to receiver Hines Ward, who has yet to be flagged for either unnecessary roughness calls that have landed him $10,000 in penalties. Ward has always been a physical player, and these were plays that probably would have been praised on "NFL Live" a few years ago but are now considered over the top.
Polamalu also thinks all of this is focused around the dollar bill, not the safety of the players.
He added that the NFL is trying to protect players from injuries because it is in the league's best interests to do so.Polamalu also thinks that, with these rules, some of the names that popularized football wouldn't stand a chance in the game today."It has more to do with money and not really with our safety," Polamalu said.
"When you see guys like Dick Butkus, the Ronnie Lotts, the Jack Tatums, these guys really went after people," Polamalu said. "Now, they couldn't survive in this type of game. They wouldn't have enough money. They'd be paying fines all the time and they'd be suspended for a year after they do it two games in a row. It's kind of ridiculous."This is the difference in a guy like Polamalu and Terrell Owens. Polamalu keeps to himself, never bringing up a point unless he really believes in it and people actually listen. TO cries. That's the difference.

Polamalu is right. There are some things that shouldn't fly, like the facesmask and the horsecollar, but a lot of what can be flagged and/or fined these days should just be part of the game.

I also go along with Polamalu; The game we all call football has changed for the worse. These men are getting big bucks, but the game is big dollar almighty. What happen to the days of the Steel Curtian or the Raiders , even the Hogs (smile). STOP with the flag football and play the GAME. They play with retro jerseys, why not play retro rules?

You can't have it both ways guys. If players want the big bucks, they can't expect the league to allow them to take each other out week after week. Notice they don't do crash up derbies with new Benz's. Cool if they would, but everyone would go broke. Same with the NFL. I'm as old school as they come. I miss watching quarterbacks wimp out or man up. Now, defenders are flagged/fined if they so much as fart near a quarterback. It is no coincidence that QB's are also the highest paid. Owners, whom Goodel represents, will not pay guys millions a year to watch them go down in week one. They are protecting their investments. Let's just hope they don't go so far as to turn the game into something that looks even more like basketball. I think of players from the past who barely had the "sand" to stay in the pocket or go over the middle and I wonder how much more productive they could have been in today's game. It makes me wonder how the game might evolve in the near future.

Okay Shane, the article wasn't bad up until the end where out of nowhere, you bring up TO as though he was a part of the message?
Did he turn away an autograph or something for you?
Troy is on the mark that the league is becoming pansy like. They constantly change rules and with the new celebration penalties, the games are getting hard to watch. I am not a celebration fan, but when its a personal foul after a great play, it just starts getting boring. At least the refs are watching something though, as they can't seem to catch penalties when the game is actually going on.

Goodell was probably tired of hearing those ex-players whining like little girls about their injuries. Of course he has to pansify the game.

I agree and , as a Browns fan, I believe that players should also be able to tackle by the hair.

I think the TO analogy was prefect. Wimpy rules for wimpy players.
Cheaters creeps and New England. ------------- Cryboys and TO
all seems to fit together with Goodels intention of ruining this sport
He is in bed with the Mob (pansy a$$ed owners) and will have this sport looking like the chambers of congress two weeks before election day. When money buys anything and promises are made and never kept.
Everyone needs to ask for goodells resignation before were planting tulips on sundays instead of football.

I agree with troy, but it's a difficult decision. You can argue both ways. it was great watching Butkis and Singletary and Lott and all those guys but i'd rather see people walk away from their football careers (please don't give the "they get paid enough, blah blah blah", it should not be about the money by any means, as troy argued). I do feel that they fine a little too much. particularly when they graze the punter and then he falls and then that's a penalty, i hate that with a passion...a good hit should remain a good hit, but if you aim with the crown of your helmet to somebody's neck or if you horse collar or facemask or do something really obvious,...come on, have fun, exert your "masculinity" but it's not necessary to over-do it. Hit the guy with your shoulder or forearm in the midsection or from the side of his arm or at the side of his quads, that's what the pads are for in the first place.I play safety and if I can make the play i'll make it, but it's really not that serious to try to injure a guy. Let them hit but don't be a jackass (that goes for hitters, as well as calling good hits "bad hits")

Just curious - to the asswipe who wrote this article - what does T.O. have to do with this conversation? It was going good until you decided to take a swipe at someone who had nothing to do with the subject. Dumb ass! You too, idiot Thasabsurd

Shane "I wanna run my fingers through Palamalu's long fro-hair" Bacon", why the hell would you even mention T.O. at the end of your article? Oh yeah, Jealous. And speaking of pansies, it looks like this thing from the Steelers likes to play "hair dresser" with girls. Since you wanted to bring him up, T.O., or any other Cowboy would be suspended for making comments about the NFL like this.
