I know that the cliche is that a win is a win, but does that apply if you're playing the Lions? For the second straight week the Vikings somehow picked up a win. But while pulling a magic trick to beat the Saints is a good thing, having to take advantage of a bogus pass interference call to beat the Lions is just flat-out embarrassing. When it's all said and done, Minnesota ended up winning because Lions quarterback Dan Orlvosky forgot that there is an end to the end zone.
That fits the story of the Lions season, but it doesn't make the win look any better for Minnesota. Consider that the Lions had lost their first four games by an average of 20 points per game. Their closest loss was a 13-point drubbing at the hands of the Falcons in the season opener. They are 1-12 in their last 13 games and are clearly the NFL's worst team, now that the Rams have gone and won a game.
But for 59 minutes on Sunday, they were able to give Vikings coach Brad Childress a reason to start updating the resume. It's fair to wonder if Childress would have been a week away from being canned if he lost to the Lions. For Vikings fans, it's also fair to wonder if that's the downside of this win--now it's going to be likely a lot longer before Childress is fired.
Detroit didn't dominate the game by any stretch of the imagination--Gus Frerotte threw for almost 300 yards, Adrian Peterson rushed for 111 and Kevin Williams had four sacks. But thanks to a pair of poorly timed Peterson fumbles, a blocked field goal and a Frerotte interception, it took an 86-yard touchdown pass to Bernard Berrian and a pass interference call on Leigh Bodden in the final minutes. On the pass interference, it's hard to say that Bodden did anything more than think bad thoughts about Aundrae Allison, but it was enough to give the Vikings 42 yards and new life. Ryan Longwell finished off the Lions six plays later with the game-winning field goal.
The Vikings fans can celebrate the fact that Minnesota is tied for the NFC North lead at 3-3. It may be an ugly 3-3, but it is 3-3.
Lions fans can rest assured that the team is doing everything in its power to get the first pick in the 2009 draft. Considering how bad that team is, that may be the only thing the win all year.

I've been following this team for over 40 years, sometimes I wonder why? 4 superbowl appearances, 4 losses. The last over 30 years ago. This team and it's players and owners have had unwavering fan support since the 60's. I guess we're just gluttons for punishment! I'm begining to wonder if the grim reaper is going to get to me before a superbowl victory. Skol Vikings!

While I've never been a person to "call for someone's head on a platter" this has gotten ridiculous. We have a good team on both sides of the ball and week after week they go out there and play their hearts out and for what? The coaching for our team is abominable. As are the rest of you who have commented, I am passionate about football, college and professional. Frankly, and I'm not being arrogant, I could call a better game and save Zig alot of money. Dudes, it's not the players this year...it's the coaching. Tommy Bowden was fired, Lane Kiffen fired...how hard is this? I can't believe that Wilf wants to waste money on a team that loses or worse beats Detroit by only 2, count 'em TWO points. Do we really want to have "All Day", the Williams and various and sundry players going to management like so many other players and ask to be traded to a contending team? We can be a contending team...WE JUST NEED A COACH. Zig cut the cord and find us a coach who can inspire our players and put Chester and "All Day" on the field at the same time. It's not my brilliant idea...everyone else has thought of it too. You want a new stadium, you've got to field a team who can win and our team can win...with a new coach. CUT HIM LOOSE!!!

I understand the point you're trying to make, but using Lane Kiffin as an example? Seriously?
When you've got a rusty, senile dingbat like Al Davis running the team - and yes, HE is running the team, not any coach he hires as a figure head - you're pretty much screwed anyway.
Al Davis gave Lane Kiffin nothing to work with, and Lane Kiffin wouldn't kiss Davis' old, wrinkly, pockmarked you-know-what...so Davis canned him and replaced him with Tom the Cable Guy, who has apparently been puckering up even more than Rob Ryan.

Point well taken, A.J. My Gawd, Davis has been around since I watched Namath beat the Baltimore Colts in the Super Bowl. Bad example. That club won't "get well" until Al gets out of it. But, hopefully, you got the rest of my point and it was well taken. Let me know. Peace out.

Bill Cowher would love to come to a team that already has a solid running game and a run stopping defense!

thejtos, can I go talk to Bill? You and I both know that Wilf would put up the money!!! I also think that my friend A.J. (see entry #6) would agree. Heck, let's make it a road trip. We all know this team has ability, talent and "all that"...what it's lacking is fire, from it's coaching staff. Let's get Bill. You are remarkable. Thanks for the great idea!!!

Bottom line. FIRE CHILDRESS. Get some one into our program know that will turn this season around for us. There is still time, but we have to do something now. There is no way that we are going to be able to go to Chicago next weekend and even has a chance to win if our idoit coach is still on the sidelines. We have all the talent in the world, but teams know what to do against us. It is not to hard, since I could be watching the game and leave the room for 5 mintues and tell you what plays we ran. He is predictable and everyone knows it. I have been saying for 2 years, where oh where is Jimmy K., #40? He has the surest hands, and everytime he gets the ball he makes something positive out of it. I am not saying that he is the answer to our prayers, but for god sake, mix things up alittle!! If the Vikings do not have enough balls to get rid of Childress, then have Frazier take over for a couple of games and see what he can do. He turned our defense into one of the best and maybe until the owner gets his head out of his butt, then maybe he could but a little spark into our offense!

Ditto's on Chilly needing a long hike back to Philly or wherever! Yes, they need a fire call, Heck Wilf, why not get Mike Tice back? He knew alot more than 5 plays or so & could lite the team up! Vikes have let too many D.Cs go- Tomlin,Bilick& Dungy to name a few. Headquarters need to get a set of new brains for the offense.

The Vikings should have been called last Sunday for having too many players on the field in the 4th Quarter. But, of course, the extra players were the refs and they werent about to call a penalty on themselves.
The Lions were screwed by bad calls. They should have won.

THE VIKES WERE LUCKY TO EVEN GET THAT CHANCE FOR THE FIELD GOAL. WHY DID HE NOT GO FOR THE 2 POINT CONVERSION TO TIE THE GAME AFTER THE TOUCHDOWN! THAT ONE POINT MAKING IT OR NOT WAS A NON FACTOR IN THE GAME. ZIGGY HE'S GOT TO GO NOW, WHILE THERE IS STILL TIME LEFT.

To add to the firing they should also fire Beaval. He was with GB when they sucked. There is no excitement, no ergencey, and no reason to go to another game. I was at the game on sunday. and it was a win. but we have a better team than this. I could have stayed home because this idea of winning in the fourth quarter is lame. we are risking 3 quarters on hoping we win in the last seconds. If thats the case we can stay home and turn the tv on 15 min. before the end of the game and not miss a step. This coaching staff has to wake up. At least during the game.

I`m glad the writer picked up on this. This season is totally unacceptable, but still salvageable. If Wilf has the nuts to fire this wingnut coach. The Vikes have gone from Super Bowl favorites to barely able to beat the lowly Lions. On bad calls by the refs. How we could enter the season without a starting quarterback is unbelievable. CAN CHILDRESS NOW !!.

Maybe Wilf has a plan to ensure a losing season, lose fan support and after no stadium, move the team to LA. Why else would he make us endure this moron and poor excuse for a coach, get rid of the idiot now or waste another year of his stupidity and lose more fans. Wilf can't be this stupid to not see this dolt is ruining a good team or maybe not.

I agree 100% with damn near every single point on this page. The play-calling has been less than atrocious, the urgency in the late minutes of the 2nd and 4th quarters when every point counts has been absolutely ridiculous, and the fact that we BARELY were able to even beat the Lions is a joke. Fire Childress, hire Cowher( I fell in love with this idea when I saw it), and don't let all of this talent we have go to waste yet again. I mean c'mon people Matt Birk isn't getting any younger!
