Warren Sapp has always been outspoken. Now that he's retired from the NFL and makes his living as a teevee personality, it's gotten worse. Much, much worse. In addition to stints on NFL Network and Showtime's Inside the NFL, Sapp also manages to dance like he's never danced before, following in the footsteps of such greats as Mario Lopez, George Hamilton and Tucker Carlson. Yikes.
Whatever, the dancing bear, when not basking in his awesomeness, shared his thoughts on the Dolphins' new favorite offensive weapon: the Wildcat. Shockingly, the former defensive lineman isn't a fan.
"This is disrespectful to all defenses," Sapp said on Showtime's "Inside the NFL" roundtable Wednesday night. "It's disrespectful. You're taking the best player in the game, the quarterback, and you're putting him out wide, outside the numbers, and you put the running back in the back. That's a great point -- how the hell you going to throw the ball? (Looks at after-the-jump photo of Ronnie Brown, you know, throwing the ball, quietly reconsiders idiocy of question.)
"How the hell you going to throw the ball? I'm not even thinking about throw right now. I'm going to get everybody in the gap. It's just power 'O.' You have the running back with the ball already in his hand."

In less insane news, Sapp's Showtime co-host, Phil Simms, offered a more measured response to the Wildcat:
"The Miami Dolphins have trouble getting offense, so they're trying to do a lot of things to get yards, to fool the defense," Simms said. "They don't have playmakers outside right now at the wide receiver position. But when it's all said and done, it got less than 50 yards of total offense for the Miami Dolphins last week..."Seriously, when Simms is the smart guy in the room, you're probably in the wrong line of work. Luckily, Sapp has a fallback plan.

Warren Sapp is a jack ass. One of the basic elements of an offense is try to confuse the defense into something they can't defend against. The wildcat is just that, it worked perfectly against NE and worked to a lesser degree against SD, and by the way Phil, they may have only gotton 49 yards BUT they also scored a TD with it against SD. My guess is they will use it until it doesn't work anymore, I'm sure that day will come fairly soon but right now it's a beautiful thing!

Sapp is trying and failing horribly to be the next Charles Barkley. Barkley is loud and outrageous at times, but one can argue that there is usually some measure of thought behind his outbursts. Sapp has missed on that last, crucial element.

Well, disrespectful or not, they're winning with it. Until someone stops them, they'll keep doing it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Warren Sapp is a moron. Basically what he is saying is that the Dolphins should stop winning because they have the balls to run a formation that no one else in the team can execute.
Warren Sapp here is what you need to do:
Shut your fat ass up.

I think Sapp is right, sort of. Defenders should feel totally disrespected when the opposing offense lines up in a way that negates the chance of passing (except for the numerous examples of teams passing out of this offense, of course). They're telling the defense, we're going to run on this play, and we don't think you can stop it. It's completely disrespecting the defense.
But you know what's worse? When the defense knows exactly what's coming - and still can't stop it. In that case, the offense gives them no respect, and is completely correct to do so. You want respect? Stop the offense. Shouldn't be so tough, since you know what's coming and all.

i have the funny suspicion that if the Falcons had been running a Wildcat with Dunn taking the snap and Michael Vick lining up wide, some REALLY crazy offensive plays would have resulted and Vick would be remembered as a totally different player

Hands down, no questions asked - anyone who's ever played a down of football with the guys in the backyard as a young kid (or a young kid at heart) LOVES this kind of stuff.
How the hell are you going to throw the ball? Well, if the QB is split out wide, you could always call an end-around pass. That rectifies the problem, does it not?
Oh, if Vince Young ever gets his act together...the evil things he could do with Chris Johnson in this formation...

Disrespectful to defenses?????? WTF are you talking about. Offense is all about trying to fool the defense. Warren, I respect you only for the fact that you played the game. But these comments are idiotic. Just go away. Your comments are stupid and your NFL commercials are stupid.

The real question here is why did Sapp become such a whiner?
Is his physical condition playing havoc with his male hormones?

The easiest way to stop the wildcat offense is the first time they line up in it and the quarterback lines up at wide out just have the defensive back put the quarterback on his ass. You can chuck his ass within 5 yards and if you light his ass up they will never line a quarterback up at wide out again.

Warren:
As an alternative to a groveling demeanor, an offense is SUPPOSED to "disrespect" the defense: e.g., through such postures as "smashmouth" football, quarterback "sneaks," the currently deceptive Wildcat offense, and so on.
As for me, I'm a delighted Phins fan. As for you, doofus, don't forget to take your meds.

Kevin expressed my thoughts exactly. Moreover, the last time Miami tried the Wildcat, the defense blitzed and rushed the gaps. No offense works when the defense is in the backfield. This is why the single-wing is still used without gaps. You can line up as many men on the LOS as you want, but they simply can't get through the O-line when they block together.
Now, if your RB happens to have an arm, that's a different matter. He becomes your QB. So, if a team has a player like Brian Mitchell or Antoine Randle El, you have a single-wing tailback. Just take your starting QB off the field.
Modern players who would have made good single-wing TBs:
Brian Mitchell (better yet, a single-wing blocking back)
Antoine Randle El
Michael Vick
Daunte Culpepper (better yet - make him a spinning FB)
Kordel Stewart (born to play TB, a true triple-threat)
My single-wing dream backfield:
TB: Kordel Stewart
FB: Daunte Culpepper
BB: Brian Mitchell
WB: Antoine Randle El

So I guess the all-out blitz is disrespectful to offenses. Right? How about a block attempt on a field goal? Is that disrespectful to the kicker? What about when defenses run a zone blitz, a big fat D-Lineman dropping off into coverage? Which is done, of course, to confuse the quarterback and O-Line. Is that disrespectful too? No, none of them are, and neither is the Wildcat. This coming from a Pats fan whose team got freaking clobbered by the 'Cat. Was I upset the Fish kept using it? Yes, of course, but I was more angry at the D for not stopping it.
