With the NFL's trading deadline less than a week away, there is already one big name that has hit the rumor mill. There are reports that the San Francisco 49ers are interested in the Bengals T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Housh is a free agent after this season and there doesn't seem to be any way the team can keep him (other than using the franchise tag).
According to a league source, Houshmandzadeh's name has come up quite frequently during conversation at Niners headquarters in recent weeks. Apparently, 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz is enamored with Houshmandzadeh and may have learned some positive things about the receiver from a member of the Zampese family who Martz remains close to.Housh tied the Patriots' Wes Welker for the NFL lead in receptions last season. Currently, he is by far the team leader in receptions (31), receiving yards (351) and touchdown receptions (three). He caught seven passes for 85 yards and two TDs against the Cowboys last week.
Despite being 2-3, the Niners have a great shot at winning the weak NFC West. The Arizona Cardinals lead the division at 3-2 but doesn't have the look of a runaway champion. The Seattle Seahawks are in shambles right now and the St. Louis Rams look like the worst team in the NFL. It is there for the taking and adding Houshmandzadeh to the Niners could put them over the top.

Imagine what this would do for J.T. O'Sullivan. The Niners would be a nice all around team with the addition of another playmaker, like Housh, to go with Gore.

This article makes it sound like Housh is just out there sitting on the waiver wire. What kind of compensation could the 9ers give to make this trade even worth discussion?

The Bengals might think this season is over already and accept draft pick(s)? Or the Bengals could always use LB help! Rivers is great but Dhani Jones is not what I'd call a great LB. Plus, with Henry back, you'd have 2 outside guys to stretch the field with Chatman in the slot. Sounds like a win win, if they were not going to be able to keep him anyway.

I like the thought process that the niners are going with, but overall, the team(coaches, & players) have to be on the same page and go out to win the ball game. BEST example: Washington Redskins. The only real bad moment for them this year was game 1, but in the second half, someone, or something clicked where the WHOLE team said,"we are better than this, i did not come out here to lose. i want to win. we are going to win." + execution. of corse they lost, because the Giantsare just an incredible team too, but they kept the "We can and will win and look where they are at now.

I would definitely give up a 2nd pick for Housh, given the nature of Nolan's poor draft decisions, he would probably screw the pick up anyway....oh wait....Nolan won't be making that call this offseason!

Housh is a #2 receiver all day long. He only caught the high number of catches because 85 is double teamed most of the game. Just like Wes Welker. As good as he was last year he's would not have been as good without #81 on the field.

I would give up any picks for the Bengals to keep TJ Houshmandzadeh. They are crazy if they don't give him the big bucks or slap a franchise tag on him.
