Merrill Hoge has been one of Vince Young's biggest critics ever since Young was getting ready for the 2006 NFL draft. While he's not saying I told you so, Hoge isn't exactly pulling back from any of his criticism now that Young is planted on the Titans' bench. In fact, he's piling on in an interview with Pittsburgh radio station WDVE."He's a baby. He's a soft baby. He's been a baby since they .... I stumbled across people who recruited him in college. They really tried to get him to go to Oklahoma. One of reasons they stopped their recruiting process was because he was such a baby . . . He was the most immature crybaby they ever met. He was soft; he wasn't tough."Hoge then said that his Titans teammates are happy to see him benched. And in the process he basically sold out his friends at NFL Films--who are the ones who put microphones on players. Hoge heads into the NFL Films offices every week for his work on the State Farm NFL Matchup show. While he said he couldn't say how he knew this because it would violate confidences, it's pretty clear what's the source of this information.
"On the sideline the players were talking about what was going on--people are mic'ed. Players defensively were talking when he threw the second pick. They were saying 'that guy comes out and points to the crowd, when things are going great he's right out in front. But when it goes bad he's nowhere to be found'. Then he gets hurt the next series and they turn to each other and say 'We now have a chance to win this game and be a better team.' "Hoge also said that Jeff Fisher told him before the 2006 draft that he was completely against drafting Young, and that he threatened to bring the University of Texas' offense to the Titans if they drafted him because he couldn't run an NFL offense.
"There are three things he doesn't have, well four now because he's not mentally tough. 1) He wasn't accurate. 2) He throws with zero anticipation and 3) he has no clue what he's looking at," Hoge said.Hoge said that he expects to see Young and Matt Leinart (who he also called soft) will be cut at the end of the season. Fisher disputed that Vince Young rode a limo from his house to the Titans training facilities and he says he didn't tell Hoge he didn't want to draft Young. He didn't specifically address any of the other comments, although he tried to blanket them all together as bogus.
But considering the evidence out there, and Hoge's long-running arguments against Young as an NFL quarterback stretching back to before when he was drafted, it's hard to think that there isn't something to what he's saying.

...Maybe all these things are true, but we should also wait till a mental health professional looks over this guy, he might have something a bit off naturally, like Ricky Williams does...
A major college can control the image, media, better then the world of a professional athlete, so he might have slipped through the cracks... Guy's lucky he isn't in New York, Boston, or Philly, instead of stick-wood's nowhere Tenn.

Why did you not quote this part from the Tennessean:
--
Hoge also said Fisher told him he was going to threaten to use the Texas offense if the Titans picked Young “because he has no chance to run an NFL offense.’’ But on Monday Hoge said he was the one who told Fisher he should run the Texas offense if the Titans picked him. Hoge said he was trying to protect Fisher as a friend from picking a quarterback he felt was destined to fail.
--
Hoge should be fired for how unprofessionally he has acted through this whole thing. His evaluation of Vince's potential is no excuse for the petty manner in which he has attacked VY personally for over 2 years now.

Merril Hoge apparantly has his own issues. How can anyone not have the basic understanding that this kid needs help and Hoge is so selfish and vain that it is more important for him to say I told you so, then to have any empathy for a man who is obviously hurting. Additionally, I cannot believe more people are not showing admiration for Jeff Fisher and how he tried to keep this inhouse (not knowing police would release this information). I tend to believe Fisher and pray that Hoge finally gets it (it is not about him or being right, it is about a man who needs help).
Lastly, anyone who saw Vince Young win back to back Rose Bowls know this man is tough, both mentally and physically.

Boo Hoo for Vince Young, be a friggin MAN and grow up! You make millions of $'s each year and you think you can cry like this and survive a man's game? Get a life and get out of the game! As for Merrill Hoge, he was one of the toughest players to ever play the game, those of you who criticize him obviously know nothing of the game, stick to your blogging about politics (which I'm sure you have just as much inexperience).

So Vince Young is having a hard time. Anybody else ever had a hard time? Merril Hodge, have you ever had a hard time? Maybe help the guy instead of bringing him down! Every website associated with Hodge tells about his loss and trials and our hearts should go out to him. Remember where you came from and what you've been through before you throw stones.

LEX I AGREE I LIVE JUST OUTSIDE 45 MINS AWAY FROM NYC & U R RIGHT IF VY WAS IN 1 OF THOSE CITIES U MENTIONED HE WOULD BE GONE ALREADY. VY NEEDS TREATMENT BADLY BUT NOT GETTING PAID THE ZILLIONS OF BUCKS THESE PRO ATHLETES GET PAID. IM NOT YELLING BEFORE SOME PERSON TYPES THAT IN RESPONSE TO MY COMMENTS. I ALWAYS TYPE IN ALL CAPS.
AND IM NOT A TITANS FAN NOR A NY FAN. TIME 4 VY TO GO INPATIENT AT 1 OF THOSE "POSH" FACILITIES THAT THE REST OF US REGULAR PPL COULD NEVER AFFORD.

Do you really think that if VY was playing for one of those large market teams that he would be gone? Seriously you have to know that money plays a large role in this. Vince is only in his 3rd season in the NFL and remember the Titans were in the playoffs last year. However I believe he only has a 5 yr deal, so it's quite possible that he will not be on the team in the near future. He has a lot of growing up to do that's for sure. We will just have to wait and see what happens. But for now GO TITANS, WE ARE 3-0 with the best defense in the NFL.

I hate when people think just because someone gets paid a lot of money that means they should be able to get over any problems they might have. That's probably why so many lottery winners end up commiting suicide.

I liked Merrill Hoge as in the backfield a a Steeler. But back in 92 when tne Steelers started using Barry Foster in Bill Cowhers debut season, Hoge complained"our offense is one dimensional, the same guy who is given the ball also catches it" He resigned with the Bears and soon retired because of his head.(concussions) Other than being a little hypocritical, he's an OK guy.
