I think we've all found it in our heart to forgive Ed Hochuli for what happened in Denver last Sunday, and are ready to get on with the rest of the NFL season. Sure, he may have cost the Chargers a shot at the playoffs, but we can give the guy points for contrition. Right, Jerry Jones?
The Cowboys owner took some not-so-subtle shots at Hochuli earlier in the week, and then, during a local radio appearance this morning, Jones was even less not-so-subtle.
"Rest assured, we all see the error and the impact of a bad call like that," Jerry said. "Now, you could easily say that it rests in the competence of the official not to blow that whistle and maybe an emphasis on that would dramatically change just a real awareness and be punitive in some areas.Got that, Ed: keep that whistle out of your mouth. Jerrah's not known for his eloquence, but he might be onto something. Doug Farrar, writing for the Washington Post's Smarter Stats, points out that Hochuli's crew called 58 false starts last year to lead the NFL (Gerry Austin's crew, by comparison, only called 26).
"You know, that guy is quick to call penalties. He's quick to draw. He's known for that. ... He's very quick. His crews call a lot of penalties. Maybe the answer is to tell people like that, 'Keep that whistle out your mouth.'"
Jerrah's solution: getting rid of whistle-happy refs and replacing them with guys who will make sure the Cowboys win a freaking playoff game. Sort of:
"My gut here is the emphasis is going to have to be taking officials like that and getting somebody else if they're going to be penalty prone," Jerry said. "Or, in that case, not penalties, but just too quick to call the play dead."PFT writes that the NFL can fine NFL personnel, but only if there is a "suggestion that the official has motives that are less than proper." I don't think Jones has crossed that line, but he seems to love taking every opportunity to point out that Hochuli, in his mind, at least, is incompetent.
Pseudo-celebrity boxing is obviously the only way we're ever going to get resolution here. Mike Pereira and Roger Goodell really need to make this happen.

If you want to talk about penatly prone, its the Cowboys. Last year they were among the league leaders in penalties. What Jerry is subtly saying is that he will try to oust those refs who think that false starts and holdings should be ignored.

Excuse my language and probably spelling but this is bullshit. Hochuli is the ref he is today because of being great at what he does. One mistake and he becomes a nothing? No Everybody makes mistakes and Jerry Jones is not someone to speak. Maybe he himself hasn't made much of one at least not much of one we can think of but let's see who are all his majors players other then Romo a bunch of trouble makers in the NFL that have either been in jail, almost blown their careers, and caused major problems all because of what? Mistakes. Now these aren't mistakes you make by accident as was Hochuli's but mistakes made because they were just plain stupid. He's continued to try and apologize for everything he's answered every email sent to him let the man get on with his life and try and feel better god knows he already feels like shit. People please it's the beginning of the season if it screwe's up the playoffs or something then it could be looked at as a problem but till the chargers prove they can make it that far in the first place this year shut the F#&k up get on with your lifes watch more football and let the man live.

Jerry Jones should be utterly embarrassed and ashamed of negatively talking about one of the NFL's premiere referees. Jones obviously is an old, bitter, and senile human being that cannot cope with the fact that maybe it's his team that is incompetent and not the referees. Jones needs to get it into his head that no one is against the Cowboys, even though everyone should be. Stop blaming the referees for what your team lacks, oh and get a life Jones!

This cock only seems to sprout up when his team is in the black. I'm so tired of him. Is there any way we can bring back Tex Schramm and Tom Landry? I'm a Steelers fan and I actually miss those guys. Jones is a complete and total fool and him having an opinion on Eddie Guns is pathetic. "Hey Jerry, your cheeks are saggin assbag...you need another lift bro"!

Jerry Jones is a senile old dingleberry. Isn't he the guy who was dumb enough and arrogant enough to fire Jimmy Johnson after the Cowboys had just won back-to-back Super Bowls with Troy Aikman and Emmit Smith? He belongs in a nursing home with Al Davis...

Senile? Do you even know the meaning of senile? The man is personally overseeing the construction of the Cowboys $1.2 BILLION stadium in Arlington. He had the sense to sign Romo, Owens and several others to long-term deals during the off-season. I don't think that satisfies the criteria for "senile."

We're all human and we all make mistakes. Wasn't it you Jerry Jones who hired Dave Campo as your head coach? How'd that work out for your ticket buying fan base?

The play in the Cowboys/Eagles game that the refs totally blew, and not a word has been said, was when the Eagles reciever threw the ball to the ground before he crossed the goal line. The ref blew his whistle and raised his arms for TD. The Cowboys could have picked up the ball, but instead they gave the Eagles the ball back inside the 5, as the Cowboys stopped on the whistle. As far as everyone blasting Jerry Jones, you would love him if he owned your club because he does everything he can to help his team win, can you say that about your teams owner? thought not

Uh, yeah actually I can say that about my owner randy. The difference between my owner (Dan Rooney) and your glory-hound is my owner has the respect of the rest of the league and he actually keeps his mouth shut when it comes to criticizing refs. Rooney runs his team with the same zeal that you think is exclusive to your owner. Rooney exudes class and humility where your blow-hard, megalomaniac is the epitome of what is wrong with the NFL. There are ways to be a good owner without having to be the worlds biggest court jester. Jones is basically a younger Al Davis...good luck with that.

Quite a bit of dumb to go around in this comment thread.
Nevermind that Jerry's observation is backed up by stats. No, let's conveniently ignore that in an infantile case of cognitive dissonance.
And when is AOL going to get around to signing up a Dallas area blogger to balance out this...imbalance.
