Former Giants defensive end Michael Strahan, now a Fox television analyst, says he'll have no problems criticizing his friends and former teammates."I criticize them to their face in the locker room: 'You sucked today,'" Strahan tells Frank Deford in a profile on tonight's Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel.
And then, as if to prove he won't hesitate to criticize former teammates, Strahan says the reason he's amazed by the famous Manning to Tyree play in the Super Bowl is that his old teammates Eli Manning and David Tyree seemingly lack the athletic talent necessary to pull the play off.
"The first thing that came to my mind was, 'Oh, Eli, you cannot get sacked," Strahan said about his reaction to watching the play live. "Eli, you have to understand, trips over his own feet just walking all by himself with nobody in the vicinity of him."
Strahan adds that Tyree was horrible in practice, and that he couldn't catch a pass that was right in his hands, let alone on top of his helmet. If he'll be that candid all season in the pregame studio, Fox made a good hire.
Real Sports first airs tonight at 10 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and re-airs throughout the month.

Even Strahan thinks that play was a fluke. We'll see how the Giants do this year. See if they can play like SB champions. And I don't mean winning against teams like the Rams.

Yeh, Strahan, real stand up guy. First he screws over the office on the signing deal, not because he's fighting for the integrity of his talent but the integrity of his bank account, seeing how his wife decides to rinse after he screws her over. Oh and then he decides to trash the QB who helps to get him a superbowl ring in his retirement season. Strahan will remain the benchmark all LB's are measured by on the field, off the field he's just another trash mouth D grunt, not really an insightful pundit. Yeh, real stand up guy!

I completely agree with you Noyzboy! What a great guy! Maybe someone is a tad jealous that HE wasn't the one involved in the game winning SUPER Bowl play. Lol. Grow up Strahan.

Michael Strahan was a good football player--not great, not outstanding, not excellent, but good. As a person, he is an empty suit--athletically talented, but a loser. Of course he won't have any trouble publicly criticizing other players, it means money in his pocket. I believe Michael Strahan will say, or do, whatever it takes for money and publicity. Eli Manning has dignity and class. Poor Michael Strahan has neither, AND he has an ugly face. Not as ugly as Kornheiser, but almost. We need more Maddens, Michaels, Aikmans and Bucks. Way to go AOL!

Strahan was a team leader and better than "good" as a player. I bet most teams would have traded a first round pick for him at just about any point in his career. As for him criticizing Eli......relax...can't you tell it's just the type of ribbing that takes place between fellow players? It's in a totally different category than Tiki's comments about Eli's attempt at leadership being "comical".

Wow, some dumbass comments in here. Take it from a totally not-offended Giants fan: Strahan is a joker, and he was kidding around. There's no Tiki Barber angle to this one. Strahan is not jealous, he's living the dream. And to the first commenter, the Giants are 2-0. Wait for them to lose before you start burying them.

To clarify, yes Strahan is a DE, yes Strahan was an amazing player and you don't have to stretch the imagination to see him getting plenty votes for a hall-of-fame spot. Yes the guy got two rings a stellar career, a comfortable life and even a movie career from the NY franchise. I guess what I was looking for was some class, humility and loyalty, it's a disappointment when players decide to trash former teammates !

He's clearly joking. Anybody get the NFL Network? He says the same thing nearly verbatim on "America's Game", that came out 2 WEEKS AGO.
Also, Tyree sucking in practice was well documented.

That's exactly correct Monte. The problem with print media is that you can't "SEE" when someone is kidding with a statement like that. Those were the EXACT comments made during the NFL Network special that Coughlin, Strahan, AND Eli narrated. Eli was actually the one who commented on Tyree and how Tyree had "the worst practice in the history of practices."
For all you who want to bash Strahan because he said something jokingly, try not to be media puppets and take off on everything you read.
ALL HAIL THE NEW YORK GIANTS!!!

Strahan struck me a classless clown with his nonsense about the Giants "stomping" the Pats in the SB. Yeah, right major beat down. They won on a freakish circus catch that could not be repeated if they tried a thousand times.
