Unless of course, Ed Hochuli decides to, in one fell swoop, shatter my afternoon wager, my fantasy team and my boy Phil. Actually, I take that back. It was two fell swoops.
NFL Week 2 Storylines
The Broncos take a big gamble and rookie Eddie Royal comes up even bigger. Right after catching a TD to bring Denver within one, Royal beats Chargers safety Clinton Hart and hauls in a game-winning 2-point conversion with 29 seconds left.

Even without Tom Brady, the Patriots are far from patsies. New quarterback Matt Cassel doesn't throw a touchdown in his first NFL start, but the defense delivers plenty of hurt as Brett Favre and the Jets fall at home.

It looks like the Redskins offense bashing was a bit premature. Jason Campbell tosses a 67-yard touchdown strike to Santana Moss, bottom, for the longest completion of his young career, as Washington stuns the Saints 29-24. Even Antwaan Randle El couldn't help but leap for joy.

First, there was the Champ Bailey "strip" which did not get overturned ... because Denver's replay technology stopped working. Hey, that's convenient! But whatever, let's move on.
To the second problem, where Jay Cutler oh-so-clearly fumbled the ball on second and goal with less than two minutes remaining. Instead of doing the sensible thing and letting the play finish on it's own accord, Hochuli got loose with his whistle and blew it dead for an incomplete pass. This is ridiculous because, as noted by the giant bold letters above, there are less than two minutes left; if it's incomplete, the replay will show that. If not, don't blow the whistle, so that way no one gets burnt.
He did anyway, and the Chargers got torched as Denver got another shot for third down (a draw play!) and fourth down (touchdown Eddie Royal!). Then, Master of Evil Mike Shanahan thought, "Hey, we're at home with a chance to tie it! Why not go for two?!?"
Naturally, one Broncos 2-point conversion later, the Chargers were beyond reeling and trying to deal with a one-point deficit, 26 seconds on the clock and no timeouts. You can imagine how that played out.
Now, there are plenty of reasons other than Hoch's horrible officiating for why the Chargers lost. Like Antonio Cromartie, who apparently does not know what his job description entails (Hint: Don't let Brandon Marshall tie the NFL record for second-most receptions in a single game.) Also, LaDainian Tomlinson's toe was acting up and he was completely ineffective.
But it just stinks -- much like the BYU-Washington game in college last week -- to see the outcome of a game solely decided because a referee simply couldn't keep his whistle in his pants.
It also makes the Chargers the best 0-2 team in the NFL (move over, Jaguars!) and gives the Broncos a ridiculous cushion to start the season in the AFC West. All that being said, yeah, needles appear to have the same effect on Cutler as they do on Jose Canseco so at the very least, there should be some excitement in this division until the end of the season.

I have been watching football for over 35 years. The worst call by far that I have ever witnessed - is Hoculli's ignoring Cutler's fumble - or saying he had whistled the play dead - AWFUL! He either had money on Denver - at any rate he should be retired or suspended by the NFL. There has to be some reasonableness to officiating decisons. This guy obviously has serious character and/or mental health issues.

That was the worst call, clearly a fumble, and the typical lawyer type, Ed Hochuli, tried to cover it up on national TV by first saying the play stands as called on the field. What??? You called it an incomplete pass and blew a premature whistle stopping the play. Only a few seconds later did he imply the error of the whistle. He should has just said.....I blew the call, it was a fumble. Owes an apology to the Chargers and should forfeit his pay for the game. He screwed up on a game changing play.

You forget that Ed Hochuli is the most respected official in NFL. And guess what? HE'S HUMAN! We all make mistakes. Look at the MLB officals: They make mistakes all the time! It makes me sick that everyone is ready to lynch this man for one mistake.
Hell, Denver went for the 2PC! The Chargers had plenty of chances to win the game. Do not put it all on E.H.'s shoulders.

Jim, I agree with you whole heartedly! Terrible officiating ! ! !
The Chargers may have been robbed of a well earned win, but they are not thieves, but the ref. is. I was born and raised in Colorado and have nothing but respect for the Bronco's, I now live in Winchester, Ca. and have been a Charger fan for over twenty years, and am deeply saddened, that an official of that caliber is able to be in the game in any manner.

Hey Jim If you've been watching football for 35 yrs how is this the worst call ever...yeah it was really bad but not as bad as 5 downs for CU....anyone remember that one? Refs aren't perfect either. If San Diego played a better game it wouldn't have come down to that in the end.

The ref should go. If one watched closely in the background you could see he was watching the play develop AFTER the fumble occured. He did not whistle the play dead or wave his arms until about three or four seconds AFTER the fumble and could clearly see that the San Diego player was going to recover. This should be reviewed by the NFL officials and the ref should be fired.

?suspension-maybe; at least a hefty fine and very public league flogging; they should take a page from the NHL and really hold these refs accountable; the guy is an attorney, c'mon, what did you expect??

I have watched the NFL since 1956 and this was the worse call in recent memory that turned certain defeat into victory! ED Haccoli should have given the ball to San Diego on the ten ...even if he blew the whistle. The NFI should give the win to the Chargers and suspend Haccoli until next year. I am an NFC Redskin fan and just want a fair outcome. Denver would not of had those plays at the end if Ed made the correct call..

It was a fumble, but San Diego has bigger issues than the refferree. Norv does not have the discipline nor respect to fire up a decent team like the Chargers. They should have been more fired up. Last week he stated the Chargers were better than the Panthers after losing. That is why you play the game. He reminds me on one of the players you get these kind of soundbites from. It can always be somebody elses fault.

These officials must love the broncos. They did a poor job last week in Oakland as well. This ref Hochuli, however appears to be taking too many steroids himself. Don't they randomly test those over paid idiots, with prison stripes. The Seattle- Pit super bowl was the so ruined by bias officiating, I quit watching football until today. Well, no need to watch it again with the rigged officiating. If the nfl commissioner doesn't get off his tail, nfl will follow the same demise as nba.

Please the Raiders in no way where even close to winning the game last week and to say the officials helped the Broncos win that game is completely stupid. as for this week with the Chargers hey Iam a Bronco fan I will take it. If the tables were turned so would the Charger fans. People are human and mistakes are made. My point is if the Chargers are so great why were then in the position to let a call or 2 decide the outcome of the game. If you take to a Charger fan they are the best team in the league. If you look at the last 2 weeks I would say no way.

Good job.
The zebras can't win with 12 players they need 13.
I'm sure the technical difficulty with the replay was someone
unplugging the thing. This is BULL....
NBA refs were betting on games, NFL refs are probably doing the same.
How much was he PAID??

Are you serious? Hey Brinson, own up to the cheap shot on Cutler with the needle comment. It is similar to the Charger #31 who put a cheap shot on a Bronco on the sideline and then taunted the fans and high fived his teammate when the "unsportsmanlike conduct " penalty was called. Now that is class. They say that comes from the team leadership.........Rivers.
By the way, that was a horrible call on the fumble and it cost SD the game. I hate to see games decided on bad calls.
Oh and another thing, isn't the instant replay under the complete authority of the NFL officials and not the home stadium? Could that be another cheap shot?

Thank-you for acknowledging that the Broncos were gifted 15 points.
In a 16 game season this can not happen.
The NFL needs to acknowledge this and mak a foral appology to the Chargers and their fans.
