After all of the initial reports, speculation and guess work from yesterday, the Patriots finally announced the news everyone was expecting to hear: Tom Brady's season is over after only 11 passes. The hopes and dreams for the Patriots, at least for the short term, now rest on the right arm of Matt Cassel, who hasn't started a football game since he was a senior in High School nine years ago.
The Patriots, as is usually the case, didn't give great details as to what type of injury the star quarterback suffered, but did offer the following statement:
"After extensive tests this morning, it was revealed that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady's left knee, which was injured in the first quarter of yesterday's game, will require surgery. He will be placed on injured reserve and will miss the remainder of the 2008 season."
The Patriots travel to the Meadowlands this Sunday for a huge divisional contest with the New York Jets, and have reportedly scheduled workouts with free agent quarterbacks Chris Simms and Tim Rattay.
There probably isn't a worse place for Cassel to make his first NFL start. The Meadowlands, after all, is a stadium that is traditionally a difficult place to play anyway, and will likely be even more inspired this week. How could it not be? It will be filled with a seemingly rejuvenated fan base thanks to the addition of Brett Favre, an opening week win, and the news that the teams chief competition in the division is now relying on, well, Matt Cassel.

Belichick refuted reports that the Patriots are working out free-agent quarterbacks Chris Simms and Tim Rattay today. He said the team has no plans to do at this time.

Daunte Culpepper, you retired a few days too early. Commissioner Goodell can always reinstate you, but it may be too much pressure for you...the Patriots would expect to win!

I would lay 4-to-1 odds on Gisele announcing that she's pregnant before the Super Bowl.

All above have spoken as typical Jets losers! Is Brett Favre the ghost of Joe Namath? Matt Cassell will probably pick your pathetic secondary apart!

Tom Brady's season-ending knee injury is directly due to Eric Mangini. If Mr. Mangini had just kept his mouth shut the Patriots would have had videotape showing where Bernard Pollard was going to be on that play. Plain and simple, this should not have happened. Do Tom Brady and the effervescent Bill Belichick not deserve to have this kind of information. Dammit, can't we just rewind the tape and prevent this from happening?
