The wide receiver formerly known as Chad Johnson is still known as C. Johnson on the back of his jersey.Although he legally changed his name to Chad Ochocinco and planned to put "Ocho Cinco" on the back of his Cincinnati Bengals jersey, he took the field with his old name on his back today against the Baltimore Ravens.
Here's the official statement from the team:
"While the NFL has recognized the legal name change of Chad Johnson to Chad Ocho Cinco, the league informed the Bengals today that certain issues remain to be resolved before Ocho Cinco will be permitted to wear his new surname on his jersey. He will wear the name Johnson on his jersey today and will be referred to as Chad Johnson on the official play-by-play sheet. Further questions should be directed to the league office."The NFL apparently is worried that allowing Johnson to change the name on his jersey would set a bad precedent. Johnson may have changed his name to Ochocinco for nothing.

This guy is a complete flake. If he has to wait a few weeks or wait until next year he will still get some mileage out of this.
He is an outstanding player with too much time on his hands.

Does anyone remember a few years ago when the XFL debuted? It was one of Vince McMahon's ideas to bring pro-wrestling style (or "rasslin'"), no holds barred action to professional football, and it ended up going nowhere. Anyway, players in this league were allowed to put any name they wanted on the back of their jerseys. The one that stands out for me was "He Hate Me", and some others also had nicknames on their jerseys. But what would happen if the NFL allowed this to get started? I'm sure that is why they wanted to nip this Ocho Cinco crap in the bud. These clowns want attention and anyone willing to go so far as to legally change their name to get it needs some serious couch time. Way to go NFL, don't give in!

I think the NFL has a sensible justification for preventing Chad Johnson from using his new name, "Ocho Cinco" , on the back of his jersey. Otherwise, it's only a matter of time until a player has his last name legally changed to "Erect Penis".

Why in the world would grown man want to change his name to Ocho
Cinco, try setting an example for the young black men in this country
instead of standing out as the standard by which all Americans, yes
and I do mean blacks as well as whites, see as foolishness out young
black men today. You make it easy for the Don Imus' of the world to
continue pedaling their opinion of black men. Black women are tired
of hearing how the "man" has kept you down you create this
foolishness yourself and others feed off off it enough is enough.
Get a life and grow up. I'm sure your mama's proud.

Yes, a bad precedent. I'm sure all NFL players are kooky enough to change their names to Spanish numbers. They were just waiting for someone to go first. Today, Ochocinco, tomorrow, uno, dos, tres....
