Giants Sign Plaxico Burress to 5-Year Deal Worth $35 Million, $11 Million This Year

Just hours before they take the field to start the 2008 season, the New York Giants have made one of their most important players happy.

Wide receiver Plaxico Burress, who had expressed disappointment with the status of contract talks, has signed a five-year, $35 million deal that will pay him $11 million in 2008.

Burress fought through an ankle injury last season to have one of his best years, catching 70 passes for 1,025 yards, and this contract represents a major reward for that great season. The question is whether it makes sense to sign a 31-year-old wide receiver to a five-year deal. But for now, one of the most important players on the Giants is happy, which means the Giants are happy.
