Shawne Merriman's Left Knee Is Worse Than Initially Reported

Well this isn't good news for the San Diego Chargers. A couple of days ago, word came out that linebacker Shawne Merriman had some ligament damage in his left knee. More accurately, a tear to his PCL. It even resulted in Merriman making a visit to everyone's favorite surgeon, Dr. James Andrews.

Today, Merriman announced that not only does he have damage to his PCL, but also his LCL. Casey Pearce at Chargers.com reports the details.

Sometime early this coming week, Merriman will fly to Miami to get one more opinion on how he should proceed. As was revealed earlier this week, he has a torn posterior cruciate ligament.
"Many guys play with that," Merriman said. "No big deal."
Perhaps the bigger issue is that Merriman has a tear in his lateral collateral ligament (LCL) as well, a fact that he revealed Saturday.
"The combination makes it kind of difficult," Merriman said. "It makes your knee feel very unstable. It's something that I've been trying to deal with, hoping it would get better by now."

As Pearce reports, it has been advised to Merriman that he go through with the surgery that could potentially end his 2008 season before it even begins.

Mike Sullivan at the North County Times reports that if Merriman elects to play without having the surgery, he runs the risk of suffering a career ending injury.
Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman said Saturday he has two torn ligaments in his ailing left knee and has been told by doctors that he could suffer a possible career-ending injury if he attempts to play without undergoing surgery.
If Merriman can't go, the Chargers would be forced to turn to second-year linebacker Jyles Tucker or veteran Carlos Polk.
