Falcons Edging Closer to Starting Ryan

Text Size A A A
It seems more and more like the Falcons are ready to hand the keys to the offense to Matt Ryan.

Falcons coach Mike Smith announced that Ryan will start when the Falcons face the Titans on Friday. Since week three is the preseason game that is treated most like a regular season dress rehearsal, that would seem to be an indication that they are planning to have Ryan start when the real games start in three weeks.

The Falcons are ready to say anything like that. Officially the team still hasn't decided which of the four quarterbacks will be the starter, but the reality is that if D.J. Shockley is the starter for week one, it means that the other three quarterbacks are all injured and every potential veteran free agent refused to sign with the Falcons.

Shockley may even get the start in the final game of the preseason as Smith is saying that he's rotating the job between all four quarterbacks, but by giving Ryan the start this week, they'll get to see how he handles game planning. If he's found to be in over his head on Friday, they can still give Chris Redman a few starts, but if he doesn't fall flat on his face, we could be starting the Matt Ryan era very quickly.
