Yes, Jim Sorgi got worked Saturday night by the Panthers defense. He's been getting killed all over the internet for his less than serviceable performance. I even made the mistake last week of thinking that because Marvin Harrison was coming back the full arsenal of weapons would make Sorgi productive. It's not like we ever forget that Sorgi's not even in the same galaxy as Peyton Manning as a QB, but maybe sometimes we assume too much about the replacement being surrounded by enough talent to at least play well. I'm sure there's similar sentiment in New England (i.e. too many weapons for Matt Cassell to not succeed a little bit should Tom Brady get hurt).
Well, Saturday night was a reminder, even though Tony Dungy is currently doing damage control and trying to blame the offensive line as well.
Colts coach Tony Dungy was more concerned about his passer's protection, or lack thereof."I thought their first defensive line really outplayed our first group offensively," he said. "We had a chance for a touchdown pass on the third play of the game and didn't protect it well."
The protection concerns are legitimate, and Colts fans must realize how spoiled they have been at QB for the better part of a decade. Until Manning comes back, you're going to have to get used to QBs that make mistakes much more frequently. One is just really skinny and the other is quite large ... speaking of which, Jared Lorenzen was much more impressive. Of course, he faced lesser talent.
Yes, it's frustrating when Manning doesn't play and you have to watch the crap that's backing him up. Also remember the backup QB for the Colts just stands on the sideline holding a clipboard during the regular season. Pre-season games don't count, and Manning never misses regular season games.
The only thing that has changed is now you should respect that much more how good Manning is.
