Both Ken Lucas and Steve Smith were back in Panthers camp but not before some closed door meetings. In one meeting, Smith apologized to Lucas for the fight that broke his nose ... and Lucas accepted."I go to Bible study, just like he does, every week," said Lucas. "For me not to be able to forgive him, then I'd just be wasting my time going to Bible study."
Lucas said he knew it could tear up the team if he took any other approach.
"We could pretty much throw the season away," he said.
"I have to admit it's tough as a human," said Lucas. "But it's bigger than me and Steve."
This may seem like nothing huge, but it may very well be. There have been rumblings in Charlotte that several Panthers defensive players aren't too thrilled with Smith and there was a divide in the locker room. There are some people thinking Smith could be traded, though I seriously doubt that now.
For the most part, it seems that this has been squashed. Smith agrees with the suspension and will undergo counselling. Lucas will have surgery to fix his nose and will miss a few weeks of practice.
It still remains to be seen if Carolina has been patched up a bit or if the team will stay broken.

OK,
the more i read, the more i'm all about some steve smith! i clicked on the espn link Sportz provided. so some panthers defensive backs aren't happy w/ Smith?? the same panthers defensive backs that are notoriously poor tacklers? is chris gamble's half-playing tail included in this group? am i really supposed to side w/ the defensive backs who have played w/ absolutely no heart over the past two years instead of the offensive stud who gives his all each and every game???
let's face facts here, even as a panthers fan i must say that if it weren't for smith, a lot of people wouldn't be interested in seeing the team (as evident by how fans shouted "We Want Moore" after David Carr failed to get Smith involved in the offense). So these defensive players who are whining about Smith jarring off at them should also thank him for helping them keep their jobs. Smith is a no-nonsense player, he's taken Dwayne Jarrett to task and he probably had a good reason for clocking Lucas since Lucas is getting PAID on that team and I'm not sure for what exactly right about now. As an earlier story said, Smith earns his check, time for Lucas to earn his
