I like Sports Illustrated writer Peter King. He's a well-connected NFL reporter and, at least based on the couple of times I've met him in person, a very nice man.But I'm beginning to suspect that King might be just a wee bit obsessed with Brett Favre.
In his Monday Morning Quarterback column this week, King mentions that readers have told him they're sick and tired of his constant focus on Favre, and he vows that he has listened. He promises that this week's column will talk about the nine training camps he's visited, and devote attention to the 2,500 or so NFL players who have been in training camp the last couple of weeks, and not the one who's been home in Mississippi.
That sounded great. King visited the Packers' training camp, and I thought it would be interesting to read his insights on which of the Packers' rookies were looking good, or how the offensive line was shaping up, or whether the Packers' pair of 30-something cornerbacks had fresh legs.
And then I got to the part of Monday Morning Quarterback about Packers training camp. And it mentions exactly one player. That player is Brett Favre.
I have no problem with writing about Favre -- I've done it plenty myself, because I think Favre is the biggest story in the NFL right now. But if you set out to write a column that doesn't focus on Favre, and then you get to the section of your column about the Packers and you ignore the 80 players in camp to write exclusively about Favre, you have a problem. Peter, seek help.

Favre is the face of the Packers. He was responsible for the modernization of Lambeau Stadium. He restructured his contract a number of times which enabled them to have a salary cap advantage in signing current players plus new ones.
Rival teams fear him on the field. He is also highly respected around the league.

To Packer Fans (This is also to Brett's lover Peter King),
First, I'll admit I don't understand how everything things Brett is the best thing in the world. When he performed well he had great running backs, good receivers and win the Superbowl because of a superb defensive.
But let's get to the point - for the last 4 years Farve has said he was going to retire. 4 years. FInally, he filed papers - meaning - I'm done playing. The Packers asked him before the draft if he was going to play. He said no. So they draft 2 quarterbacks! If Farve was going to play, they would have drafted a tight end or a running back or something that could push them to the Superbowl. But they had to draft 2 quarterbacks for the future.
Wow, what a selfish fanchise for moving on when someone told them they wouldn't play. Hey, I bet everyone on here could tell where ever they work they are going to retire, have the party and than come back to work in 3 months. Sure.
Farve's ego is doing this. It's like a lot of players at that age. There are few Elways that retire on top. (Think Roger Clemens also for baseball).
Farve made this mess. He chose to play the retirement game every year (Remember Green just gave him a 4 year contact - 2 years left).
One final point - if Farve was such a great guy and team player he would have said "I'll be backup and mentor Rogers. If things don't go well, I'll take over". Instead he held his breath, stomped his feet and wanted to start. Sounds like Farve's love of Farve and not his teammates or team.
