Eagles' Shawn Andrews: 'I've Been Going Through a Very Bad Time With Depression'

Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Shawn Andrews has still not reported to the team's training camp, and the reasons have remained mysterious, with rumors about health problems, personal problems, or discontent with his contract.

Now Andrews has finally explained: He's depressed.

He tells the Philadelphia Daily News:
"I'm willing to admit that I've been going through a very bad time with depression," the Eagles' two-time Pro Bowl right guard said. "I've finally decided to get professional help. It's not something that blossomed up overnight. I'm on medication, trying to get better."...

"I really was kind of at my end," he said. "I've really had a lot on my mind, really (been) contemplating a lot of things." ...

"Football is important, it's a means to an end, but my mental health, I feel like, is a lot more important,"

"I don't expect sympathy," he said. "I know there are harsh people in this world, but dang, [negative comments made about his absence from training camp] made me feel low. I do care what people think about me, to an extent."

Andrews may not expect sympathy, but I'd like to offer him some. Depression is a difficult thing to go through, and Andrews is working for an employer that fines him $15,000 a day when he misses work because of it. Fortunately, Andrews says he's getting better, and he expects to report by the end of the week.
