The NFL's hottest quarterback controversy will begin tomorrow at Green Bay Packers training camp, when Brett Favre shows up to practice and begins his competition with Aaron Rodgers.
Although the Packers' brass has been steadfast that Rodgers is the team's starter, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Packers have now agreed to allow Favre to compete with Rodgers for the starting job, and Favre won't necessarily be the backup this season.
That's bad news for Rodgers, but if the Packers aren't going to cut or trade Favre, and if Favre really is going to end his five-month retirement tomorrow, it's the right move. It would be insane to have Favre in training camp and tell him he's not even going to get a chance to compete for the starting job.
And, with all due respect to Rodgers, it would be insane to think he's going to beat out Favre in an open competition. If coach Mike McCarthy really chooses the quarterback who's most likely to lead the Packers to victory in Week 1, he'll choose Favre.

Don't count on it Michael. They would not be the first team that has made that boneheaded move. All you have to do is look at the Arizona Cardinals. It has been obvious that Matt Leinart has no business being a starting QB in the NFL, but yet he is and makes his 10 mil. Yes, Kurt Warner makes mistakes, but can get creative and win.

Actually, this is a smart move by the Packers org. They save the 20 million from the marketing offer, they dont trade Favre and they get to name Rodgers the starter. Brett has outsmart himself and now when they name Rodgers the starter he will once again retire.

Josey, you have a wacky version of reality. The 20 million dollar deal will always be on the table, otherwise the Packers wont be able to sell any merchandise with Farve's name on it. He'll get it when he retires no matter what.
I trust they'll pick the best quarter pack if the don't trade him first. The odds that Rogers is the better quarterback are VERY slim. Favre is still pulling the strings here, not the Packers.

The best thing they could do is trade Favre to the Jets (since they don't play them in the regular season and it is extremely unlikely they'd meet in the Super Bowl). This way the Packers get something for him, which they don't get if he retires. The trade agreement could contain a provision that the Jets will not trade him to any other team and if Favre retires, rights to his contract revert to the Packers.

Ron Wolfe, mamma, and josey wales,...........you all three are 'whack jobs.' Not so fast my little minded friends........
Brett will come out of this just fine 'without' retiring! And as for the Taliban 'al Qaeda' packer organization, good luck with Arie. It's just more proof to the public eye that the Packers organization is guilty of running a Taliban 'al Qaeda' tactics organization. Holding Brett 'hostage' and not letting him go. PATHETIC!!!! Scared little GB Taliban 'al Qaeda' organization.....their player's aren't good enough to beat the Vikings with Brett Favre........I suggest the Packer players be sure to wear their dresses and training bra's for training practice Tuesday..........

Favre is God said...
No matter what this will still end badly...
There is NO doubt Favre would win the "open" competition if held. If you think differently, you're crazy.
i understand how the Packers are fed up with this, plus the 4 previous years of Favre flip flopping and how it was supposivly over with when he officially retired. The bottom line is that Favre gives them the best chance of winning NOW than Rogers does.
So the best thing to do would be to either play to win now by having favre start or play for the future and trade Favre to get draft picks in return...
I'm confident that Favre will be as productive as last year, but the one thing that troubles me is "The Madden Curse"!
As much as i would like to see Favre come back to win one more ring, there are too many bad omens surrounding this whole thing.
If there is anyone to break the curse, it would be Favre. Think about it, Madden LOVES Favre and anytime he gets to talk about Favre he gets a boner...
Onee more for the ages.....
Go Favre!

Favre is one year older and one year slower. Favre Favre still has a proclivity toward giving away games by making dumb plays. Not often, but he will give away two or three per season. Rodgers is young and strong and a year better than last. Rodgers played well when he came on in relief of Favre. Although Favre is very popular, hus skills have clearly diminished. No one should be surprised if this is a very close competition. Personally, I would trade Favre for as much as I could get, and then wish him well. Tiz time to move on.

Does Brett have the competitive edge over Rodgers in competing for the starting position, definitely. But that's a competition against one man. Does Brett have the ability to best last years record of 13-3, I don't know. If this was 4 or 5 years ago we wouldn't care. Brett was always coming next year to try again. I believe if Brett was 99 years old he would still want to play and somehow try, he has the ultimate heart of a player to play. And therin lays a question , is he comming back because he feels he is the best option for the team, or the best option for him? As a fan of the pack, I would hate to see Brett come back and go out on a low note. I myself would not like to see Brett in any othe uniform but the Green Bay Packers. I can't imagine the content of play if he was the the opposing QB against GB. If Brett does start this season with the Pack, only thing for sure is another year to wait to begin rebuilding in that position, another year added for his inducton to the Hall of Fame and we will continue to stand and cheer him when he takes the field.
