Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith will be suspended for the first two regular season games after punching CB Ken Lucas in the face.John Fox, speaking after the Fan Fest scrimmage at Bank of America Stadium, said Smith's actions would not be tolerated and that Smith has been given conditions for the future regarding such behavior.
Fox also said that Lucas suffered a broken nose.
Stuff like this cannot be tolerated. As I said before, this isn't some heat of the moment practice scuffle -- this was two guys standing on the sidelines getting in an arguement in which one started whaling on the other. It was interesting to see what the Panthers would do to their star player and nice to see the team take this action (and I am a Steve Smith fan).
After all, this is a team whose coach and general manager are on the hot seat and need a very good year in order to keep their jobs. It had to be tempting for them to keep Smith's punishment seperate from missing games.
Under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, Carolina had the right to suspend Smith for four games.

I can't believe you would remove your most potent weapon from 2 regular season games. Fine him (done) & maybe suspend him for some preseason games, hell file a civil lawsuit if you must but basically tossing away 2 games is stupid imo. And would the writer please expand on how "stuff like this can't be tolerated" vs. a dui which rarely results in a suspension. What about M Lynch & his hit & run?

They didn't throw away two games. And they had to take action. If you don't believe in his punishment you have to be out of your mind. He punched another player, and a teammate at that. Untolerable. Should've been suspended longer. And I am a panthers fan. I still believe 3-4 games was in order.

This is sad commentary guys. For one thing it's not the first time it's happened. In the real world behavior like this gets you jail time. I too enjoy watching Steve play but this is criminal behavior.
I doubt Steve will say he quits. I have more faith in him than that. He has definite anger management problems. This was not just pushing and shoving after getting hot about contact.

I agree with you al coholic, for if the team didn't suspend him, it would: 1) reinforce his anger problem, 2) reinforce that he gets "special treatment" and the team has a dual standard, 3) tell Ken Lucas he's worth less and inhibit any resolution of whatever conflict between the two, 4) damage, if not destroy, any team unity, spirit and cohesiveness, which will likely lead to 5) the loss of far more games than whatever this two game suspension might lead to. On the plus side, the suspension will give Moose, Hackett and the others game time to work out any kinks on their timing with Jake. And I certainly believe that winning at any cost is not the answer, and losing a game or two is well worth the long term team solidarity that has to come first. So I believe the two game suspension was a good compromise between the slap on the wrist Christopher and Renee apparently wants and the four game suspension he could have gotten.

I think it was a bad thing to happen but he is the best and if any other best dd this nothing would happen therefore I belive that john fox is not using his head and maybe they will get rid of him once and for all this way we might have a chance to do something ,also look at the super bowl contenders coach look what he did and did he even get a slap on the hand I think fox just likes to see us lose

steve and al, you guys are dead-on. the suspension is justified and ken lucas does need to know that the team is as supportive of him as it is of smitty. although i think renee made a good point too, i actually feel that dwayne jarrett's dwi is more serious, i don't take drunk driving lightly at all.
now who starts for the panthers in this situation. if carter were still around, you'd line the speedy carter w/ possession muhammad. but carter is gone and moose and hackett are both possession guys, and the way the panthers offense is, there needs to be one speed receiver on the field to stretch the defense enough that it can't just play the run and short pass. w/ smitty out, are the panthers gutsy enough to start ryne robinson opposite moose?

Steve Smith is one fantasic football player with his end zone celebrations. Two weeks without seeing him do his Soul Train dances will be sad but the Panthers coaches did the right thing by suspending him for breaking his teammates nose with a punch that would make Antonio Tarver proud.

He sucker punched the guy...what does that tell you. This was not a fight--a fight takes two--this was an uncalled for altercation.
This is the second time Smitty has done this action. The suspension is good plus the fine then when the year is up--get rid of him. This is a team and one Smitty don't see to care much about that he sucker punches his own teammate. And me--who was always a die hard Smitty fan.

what the heck is wrong w/ people saying get rid of him? i can't believe the stupidity i'm hearing. he has physically attacked teammates twice in SIX YEARS. that is 1/3 of an attack per year, and we don't know to what extent Ken Lucas provoked this.
but what some of the idiots on here seem to be forgetting is that Smith wins games for the Panthers, in fact Smith often wins games single-handedly. Whether you like it or not, the hard truth is that even 1/3 of an attack per year doesn't make him not worth the trouble. He's so important to the team that even if he committed these fractions more often, it still wouldn't make him not worth the headaches and money. Aside from perhaps Ladanian Tomlinson and Tom Brady, no one player in this league is as invaluable to his team as Smith.
Sometimes players are more trouble than they are worth (Tank Johnson). But regardless of how much trouble Smith may be (and he's really not that much), he's still worth every headache

Sorry, but I can't buy into the "win at all costs" attitude. We can't have players sucker punching other players, especially their teammates. A policy of virtual zero tolerance for actions like this would make this a non issue iln the future.. A year or two of not playing would provide the necessary incentive to behave within the limits of the law.
I'm not suggesting that level of punishment for Steve since it wasn't implemented before his attack. But I promise you if it was announced today this kind of behavior would go away.

The problem is they need the whole team to win and they can't have one guy fracture the team. This is the fear--that Smitty being a top player cannot be favored and mistreat the other players and the staff do nothing about it. This is it for Smitty--one more and he is out. You cannot go through life breaking people's noses and damaging eyes for no reason and everyone knows Smitty has a bigger mouth than anyone--he has assulted 2 people so far that we know of and thrown out the game once. They are starting to say he is a ticking time bomb--plus this makes Smitty and the team nothing but targets of other teams. This is as bad as Vicks brother who stomped on a player when he was down.

"It's only 1/3 of an attack per year"... NICE!!! I see you made it to rudimentary math class, but skipped out on legal ed and logic classes.
"He's only assaulted two people in 6 whole years!" really makes you wonder about the person that sees that as a small amount. How many, dare I ask, have you assaulted in your workplace (or even outside of your workplace) in the past 6 years?
