After that fight broke out during practice yesterday, the Carolina Panthers may have to think about being without their best player for a month.
Receiver Steve Smith and cornerback Ken Lucascame to blows which ended with a bag of ice to the side of Lucas' face and Smith sent back home to Charlotte. Under the collective bargaining agreement, the Panthers are allowed to suspend Smith for a maximum of four regular season games.
Now, you may say that fights happen all the time in camp. Yeah, but most of them are due to rough play during drills. This happened as the two were standing around and watching special teams drills.
Neither is at camp anymore. Both could face suspension. The Carolina coaches and team officials aren't commenting or speculating on what could happen ... but many outsiders think that Smith will at least be suspended for the Week 1 game against San Diego.
By the way, the team's FanFest is today in Charlotte (my sister and her family always go). It will be an interesting day ... to say the least ... if the most popular Panther isn't there.
What people are forgetting is that the panthers now have to replace their starting cornerback for at least 3 weeks. With who? There is no way the Panthers are ever going to win the Superbowl with all these distractions. No way. Smith should've been traded.
