The Green Bay Packers are so intent on keeping one of the greatest and most popular players in franchise history away that they're now offering him a fortune not to end his retirement.
WTMJ-TV Channel 4 in Milwaukee reported Wednesday that Packers president Mark Murphy, who met with Brett Favre and his agent yesterday, said the Packers would pay Favre $20 million over 10 years to remain retired.
The way such a contract would work, most likely, is that Favre would re-affirm his retirement and then say that he had signed on to be an ambassador for the team, appearing at a few events, signing a few autographs, and staying out of the way of the football team. Not bad work, and not a bad salary, at $2 million a year.
Unless you don't want the job because you want to keep playing football, which is the case with Favre. Favre wants to play football, and $20 million won't be enough to convince him not to.

This is seriously a bad move by the packers, if confirmed.
Till now, i agreed that Favre was acting childishly and needed to grow up. But by offering the money as a carrot - the Packers have shown immaturity.
Ted, paying $20 million to Favre will put such enormous pressure on the packers - not just financial, but expectation-wise. Can you imagine what the packer fans would do Rodgers? Every wrong move will be criticized as a $20 million mistake. What if Rodgers is a class-A bust? You got a HoFer to stay away for a lousy one.
Ted, don't become a laughing stock. Instead, trade Favre to Vikings even for a sixth round draft pick. Bribing Favre is the worst possible outcome for the Packers

If this story is true, it amounts to blackmail on the part of Brett Favre. I always enjoyed watching him play but this is enough for Brett, you should stay retired and quit badgering people and being a cry baby. We don't want to see you play anymore. You will be a has been quarterback, langusihing on the bench of some team other than the Packers and being on every camera.
Is this what you want for your loyal fans, this petty bickering and posturing? Go home and get a hobby. You are through in football. Spend the 20 million to buy your own team.

Wow. This has to be one of the most disasterous retirements in the history of pro sports. Brett should've thought it over until this summer on whether to retire or not. Neither side, the Packers or Favre, are looking good on this one. The Packers are treating one the greatest players in franchise history like an unwanted guest who won't leave. Favre is looking like a spoiled athlete who wants what is best for him and not for the team. Best way to solve this? Release Brett Favre and let him play around with some other franchise.

Wow.. first and foremost. Don't say "we" don't want to see you play anymore. Because as far as I am concerned, if he's willing and able. He should play. He wants to play. He was pushed to make a choice between retiring and playing.. he simply got tired of them asking and without any thought, decided to retire. I'm sure he's not doing this for publication. He is one true quarterback who loves to play the sport. He's never been in it for money, and this $20mil bribe is just that. I've always been a packer fan, but after everything I've seen and read.. its disturbing to see a 'franchise' be so unwilling to give a man what he wants that they sink to this low of a level and insult his dignity? I understand he shouldn't have retired. But ya know.. some ppl change their minds, and yeah.. not everyone is able to say.. "ya know, i want my job back.. i change my mind". But we aren't all NFL football players.. and unfortunately we aren't always able to ask for our job back when leaving.. but he is, and since the Packers don't want him back to START, they should release him and let him play for a team that does want him, and needs him. Evidently the Packers are 'set' on Rodgers starting.. and they don't 'need' Brett.. so let him go!

The $20,000,000 shows who is at fault in this whole mess. The Packers should fire Ted Thomson and bring back Brett Farve as their starting Quarterback and General Manager. Therefore at the time Farve finally retires he will still be with the Green Bay Packers. Besides if Ted Thompson had listen to Farve Randy Moss would be with the Packers now. I have been a Packer fan since the 1960's. My question to Ted Thompson what would Vince Lombardi think of trying to bribe a great quarterback to cover up his misstake?

It's a bribe not blackmail. Blackmail is an extortion of money or something worth value by threats of exposing a criminal act or something that hurts the persons name.
A Bribe is money or something of vaule to influence someone's views or actions.
Bottom line is that, doesn't that break some rule or ethnic value in the NFL? If the result of tampering is against the rules why isn't bribing by a team? It's the same thing as a college giving money or material things to a student for attending a school and playing for whatever team they have. The Packers are doing the same thing by offering money to Favre. The only difference is that it's not for him to play but not to play.
If these reports are true, I expect the league to take action on the Packers, such as the Packers wanted the league to take action on Min. for Favre talking to team.

If this is true..........the Packer management is a bunch of "milk toast sissy's" that are scared to death. And scared of what??? Favre will be a joke no matter who he plays for this year. Management should put their "money where their mouth is" and not in Brett Favre's pocketbook. Who cares if he plays for a team in the NFC North. Just go out and prove your point by kicking his ass. What a bunch of wimps.......HA!
No matter who he plays for, Mister Aw Shucks will not make the playoffs and his stats will suck! Can't wait to see you suit up Brett...........

The 2 million a year is no big deal for a franchise like the Packers. If they still think he is worth something, they should let him play.If they don't want him to play they should just release him, save the 20 mil. End of story!

Up until now, I have sided with the Packers. Brett is under contract, and if he wants to play, the Packers have the right to decide who he plays for. But to offer him money to remain retired is retarded. If he comes back, he is an asset and can either be a back-up QB or traded for value. By offering to pay him for staying retired, the Packers are taking an asset and turning it into a huge liability.

Check out this blog entry. It was not a bribe, because the $20 mil is an offer to Brett to be a long-term spokesman for the franchise, whether he plays or not.

Please don't do this ,this guy got you to the nfc game and made a jugement throw' but you have to go with your instinct. It was not his fortune but he is hall of fame material and he do not get hurt ,how can a team take a chance on somebody else.player's get old it takes time to rebuild. I am a 49 er fan seifort was a good coach but if he started Joe he would have wow 2 more or 3 super bowls because you need some luck and they trusted him.

If you look through all the smoke and gun fire - once the Packers decided to commit and go with Rodgers all the hee-hawing stopped and Brett wanted to play.
He's really saying, without saying it, is that he wants to play but not for the Packers.

WTF?? The guy is one of the best players in the world & is being treated terrible. He just wants to play football. Leave him alone. If the Packers think that they have such great QB's already & don't need - give him up. Screw the trade, he retired & if someone wants him & to pay for the rest of his contract - they should get him. End of story. The Jets need a good QB & he would really do great things for NY. He is a great role model & a good person - he should not be treated this way by the Packers or by the rest of the NFL. It's sad that so many teams are being lazy about getting him. The Jets need to grow a pair & try harder to get him.
