Packers Won't Rule Out Trading Favre to Vikings or Bears

All along we keep hearing from pundits that the Packers would never allow Brett Favre to end up playing for any of the team's NFC North rivals. Packers GM Ted Thompson said the same thing explicitly on Monday.

But that might not be true.

The Milwaukee-Journal Sentinel is reporting that if they get left with no other attractive options, the Packers would consider trading Favre to the Vikings or Bears, even though that would likely fix the biggest problem with two of the team's top rivals.

Favre appears to know that he has the Packers held hostage (which was never more clear than when they offered him $20 million to not play). He hasn't agreed to talk to Buccaneers or Jets officials, which makes it really hard for the Packers to work out a trade with the teams they want to deal with.

They sure don't want to carry Favre on their own roster, with a $12 million cap hit and the reality that they could end his record-breaking consecutive games streak by simply benching him for Aaron Rogers. So in case you're watching, there don't seem to be a whole lot of appealing options for Green Bay already--give it a week or so and they may be willing to make a cross-division trade.

Supposedly the Packers are looking for a first-round pick for Favre, which is a pretty steep price for what may be a one-year rental. But if you're the Vikings or Bears, it would seem very wise to offer a second-round pick and maybe a late-rounder as well to try to snag Favre. Minnesota already has the best defensive line, the best set of running backs and one of the best offensive lines in football. Adding Favre would immediately make the Vikings a serious Super Bowl contender, while the Bears offense would go from pathetic to intriguing with Favre under center.
