Steelers' Interest in Jones, Jones' Interest in Steelers Both Make No Sense

The Steelers have a great fleet of sports cars in the garage. There's a Ferrari 430, a nice Lamborghini Gallardo, and a couple of Corvettes for good measure. The only problem is that the roof on the house has some pretty significant leaks. So to take care of that, the Steelers are looking at buying a Jaguar to the fleet.

In a move that continues to make no sense, the Steelers are apparently one of the two finalists for ex-Lions running back Kevin Jones. According to Jones' agent, the decision between the Bears and Steelers will be made today.

When it came to offensive line help, Pittsburgh was nearly shut out this offseason (losing Pro Bowler Alan Faneca and adding center Justin Hartwig), and will go into the season worse off than they were a year ago, but when it comes running back, the Steelers are in outstanding shape.
The Steelers already have four tailbacks on the roster that they are comfortable with--Willie Parker is coming off of three straight seasons with 1,200 or more yards, while Rashard Mendenhall was the team's first-round pick. And behind them, the Steelers still have Mewelde Moore, who has shown promise as a backup/occasional starter in Minnesota, and promising second-year back Gary Russell.

So figuring out the team's interest in Jones, even at a bargain rate, seems rather puzzling. There's a pretty decent chance that Jones will be a bargain when he signs--he's a former 1,000-yard back who is scuffling to find any interest as he comes off of a knee injury. But in Pittsburgh, he would likely not even dress on Sundays--Mendenhall and Parker will be the top two backs, while Moore would dress because of his key roles on special teams.

With Cedric Benson dumped in Chicago, the Bears would seem to make a whole lot more sense for Jones. But since nothing about the Steelers interest in Jones up to now has made sense, I guess we should be too surprised if they end up nabbing him after all.
