Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo took time out of his busy schedule of ferrying Jessica Simpson back and forth to the airport to participate in the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe this weekend.
Romo didn't just show up to hobnob with the important folk, he came to play. In fact, he was tied for the lead midway through the final round, but was unable to overcome Rick Rhoden or his mustache and finished third, four shots off the lead.
Still, Romo fired an even-par 72, which is pretty impressive for a guy whose full-time job and high-maintenance girlfriend now take up most of his time.
Well, it's pretty impressive to everybody but Chris Baldwin of TravelGolf.com. Baldwin, it seems, hates Romo and everything he stands for. On Sunday, Baldwin ripped Romo for falling into a pond after an awkward bunker shot (re-enacted by Woody Austin above) during Saturday's round:
The guy just can't help himself. He's going to find a way to make himself the center of attention while showing the lack of smarts that stops him from ever winning a single playoff game. Whether it's bragging about shooting that 84 at Torrey Pines - that took him an unfathomable nearly seven hours to complete. Or butchering "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" at Wrigley Field. Or falling ass first into the water.Look, I'm no Romo apologist, but I don't remember him "bragging" about firing an 84 at Torrey Pines. That said, there aren't many scratch golfers getting around that course in 84 strokes, so even if he did brag, then what? That somehow makes him the "center of attention?" Really? You mean, more than some dude slamming him for falling in a pond? Okay.
Baldwin wasn't done. The Dallas Morning News pointed out his insane diatribe, and never one to pass up attention (the irony burns), he responded:
Interesting how the Dallas Morning News failed to note how Romo choked in another sport this weekend though. That's right, it turns out that Jessica Simpson's dimmer half doesn't just freeze up in football when something's big on the line. He gags in golf too.Apparently, Romo's inability to shoot under par has everything to do with the Cowboys' inability to win a playoff game. Weird. Baldwin suggests that Romo will be 0 for 3 in the postseason in a year's time and that somehow has to do with his short game.
I'd like to think Baldwin is joking, but this reads too much like a Skip Bayless "Troy Aikman is GAY!!!" rip job. Oddly, Baldwin ends his post with this: "Of course, you won't read about any of this in those suddenly sunny-side homer Dallas Morning News reports. Where's Skip Bayless when you need him?"
Um, yeah, I think I found him and he's working for TravelGolf.com. Woody Paige is not impressed.
