That was Mike Alessi, who, according to Auto Racing Daily, suffered two broken scapulas, a broken rib and a bruised lung in a crash last weekend at Red Bud Track & Trail in Buchanan, Michigan. His manager says:
"We were pretty concerned after seeing Mike's crash. It happened in a very fast section and he ended up coming to rest on a blind part of the track and was then hit by several riders. Due to the nature and severity of his injuries, it is not likely that we'll see Mike back in action this season."The 20-year-old Alessi began riding motorcycles at age 3 and became a professional racer at 16.

I'm more into mountain biking, not motocross, but what puzzled me was the seemingly laid-back, casual response after the crash. Glad to see one rider doubled back to check on the guy in spite of the competition.

Amen brother/sister. I've been to T-ball games that had more EMS support. What about the bystanders? No actual ambulance at a highspeed motocros race? Hmmm. Can you smell the lawsuit?

I have a son who also competes in motorcross and I can't believe the flagmen don't get to the hurt rider more quickly.
This is a huge problem at most of the races and there needs to be more qualified people out there that is paying better attention. I noticed the guy with the yellow flag just stands there and never puts up the caution flag so the other riders can see it. What's up with that? Do something would ya!!

To Odie and Mark:
You two obviously have no idea about the sport and shouldn't even be on here talking. If it was at a local track and a normal race event, everyone would be on the track seeing if he's ok. It is against the rules for any unauthorized persons to enter the track area on a professional race event. They had to red flag the race and call for a restart because they could not get mike off the track in time. A professional race hasn't been red flagged in a long time.
And for the casual reactions by the 'red necks'... first, I would be willing to bet that majority of the people there don't even come close to fitting in that stereotype, it's not NASCAR my friend (sorry). And second, people are in shock and awe because there hasn't been a crash this horrific in professional motocross in a long time.
So may god forgive you assholes for not anticipating your first reactions, and for not wishing Mike well.
My prayers are with you Mike Alessi, I saw your interview on SPEED ch. and I'm glad to see that you are ok.
I would like to ask people that read this to help me reach out to Mike Alessi and ask him to please start wearing a neck brace such as the leading one made by Alpinestars and the Leatte Brace company.

Having been a racer in offroad competitions for over 20 years it's a little distrubing to see some of the negative postings here which refer to a lack of medical assistance. To set the record straight, at this level of competition there is a special medical team that goes by the name of the Asterisk Medical Mobile Center http://asterisksuperpass.com/html/ammc.html#history
They provide immediate help to injured riders with a staff of doctors, nurses and medical assistants. They bring to the races every week a mobile, state of the art, emergency medical center. At the amatuer level of all AMA sponsored events, no racing can start or continue unless a staffed ambulance is onsite. I do agree that there should be better trained flagmen. Ones who respond with a bit more knowledge and assistance. Racing motocross is a 100% injury rate sport, if you race long enough you are bound to get hurt. Having been an injured rider on more than one occasion, I am glad that I was in an AMA sanctioned event that provided me with almost immediate care. I wish I had these guys sitting at my practice track everytime I ride because it's about a half hour trip to a hospital where I live becasue when you are injured those mintues tick by painfully. I guess thats why motocross racing isnt for everybody.

Our prayers are with you and your family Mike. We know that you will be back to race the outdoor season next year and make a run for the title. You will be missed the rest of the season with your trade mark holeshots and talent to keep Stewart on his toes.............

I can't believe they let him get up. No c-spine stabilization, no backboard, nothing??! They could've caused him more serious injuries but not doing these basic procedures. Unbelievable! Thankfully, it looks as though he is ok though.

Sure took a long time for someone to check the driver! They were more concerned about the bike being in the way than if the driver was breathing!!! Someone need some basic First Aid training ABC's.

It made me cry to watch this. NO ONE rushed out to see if they could help him. I have seen this uncaring attitude several times in the news the last few weeks. What are we coming to that we have no sense of what is right and wrong, and could care less about a fellow human being. I'm afraid there is no hope....sad!!!

I can't believe how long it took for someone to bend down and see how he was, real scary if you ask me. It was nice for the other competitor to stop but would have been even more humane to get off the bike and reassure Mike or see if he was even alive! Glad to see he's ok, it looked much worse than it was thank God.

Mike Alessi has the heart of a lion. He came into the premier ranks of motocross rather cocky, but has matured over time. Suzuki Team Manager, Roger Decoster, (The MAN), has got to be pulling his hair out right now. While motocross is an often brutal sport with little room for error, it warmed my heart to see the obvious concern of rider 15 (Tim Ferry), who doubled-back to check on the badly injured Alessi. To the non-fan it may look like no one was in a big hurry to help the fallen warrior, but that is not the case. To venture out onto the track in such a blind, high speed section could be fatal. What we can't see are track workers at the top of the hilly section waving off approaching racers. Heal fully and fast, Mike. God Speed.
