Giants Assistant: 'No Idea' if Jeremy Shockey Will Stay in New York

Will Jeremy Shockey be a New York Giant in 2008? When the draft came and went and Shockey wasn't traded, most people figured that meant Shockey was going to stay with Big Blue, even if he wasn't particularly happy about it.

But Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride doesn't know if he can count on having Shockey available to him. From the New York Daily News, via PFT:

"It's so nebulous right now, you just have no idea," Gilbride said. "Right now he's on our team. We're planning on him being there. He'll be one of the guys that we'll look to feature and one of the guys that we'll look to depend on. Hopefully he'll be here in good spirits and ready to do the things that we know he's capable of doing. But who knows? It's certainly beyond my hands."

Although the Giants won three playoff games and the Super Bowl without Shockey, who broke his leg in December, he's still a good player and almost certainly would contribute more to the team in 2008 than whoever they could get for him in a trade. For that reason, it seems unlikely that Shockey will be traded. But, as Gilbride says, who knows?

Shockey may be a good player but the chemistry of the team totally changed once he was gone. I say let Shockey go and start Boss...

I believe Shockey is staying. While Reese would trade him for the right deal, what that is might be a #1 in 2009 and a veteran player, starter, this year. Will anyone pay that? Doubtful.

Hey Guys
There wasn't a thing mentioned to what Shockey said to Gilbride. If you read the Post article, it will tell you that Gilbride couldn't repeat what Shockey's response was. This is not what the NY Giants are about. I don't think the Maras and Jerry Reese will be to happy with that outburst and response. I think Mr. Gilbride will discuss this with Reese and further discussions will take place to evaluate this situation. The bad news is that I hope Reese won't accept less for Shockey in a trade ie:NewOrleans ...because he feels the negativity he might bring feeling like he does. Something should've been done before on or right after draft day for Reese to have leverage. Reese and the Giants at that time thought Shockey really wanted to stay in NY. Once again thats what happens when you don't deal with the player directly and Reese had to settle for phone conversations with Rosenhauss. I think Drew lead Reese down the wrong path. Read between the lines: Shockey does not want to be here. Besides, with the offensive philosophy changing somewhat, the Giants will line up more often with four wide. This will decrease the opportunities for Shockey.

Yes, he is a good blocker. But he can be replaced on the weak side with equally good blockers in Darcy Johnson and/or another OL. Remember what a great job that Seubert did blocking for Tiki as a weak side TE in 2006?

So, say goodbye to Jeremy. He was one of the best early in his career. However, he may indeed be more valuable to this team in 2008 as a blocker than a pass receiver. Accordingly, it suggests that we get as much in trade from NO for him as we can.

The guy never shows up for workouts preferring to be in Miami. He seems to be a very selfish player. It's all about him. Send him packing, preferrably to Oakland. A loser deserves to be on a loser. His act is getting so tiresome.

You can never have enough firepower on offense, the whole league is retooling to come after the super bowl champs ny giants do you really think kevin boss is the threat that shockey is NO not now that is i like boss but nobody knows if even he could hold up for a whole season playing a couple of games in relief is totally different from starting if he gets hurt than it's even more pressure on Eli to perform (no extra blocking for the run game no security blanket for Eli in the passing game)be careful for what you ask for chemistry is really great but if you don't have talent chances are you are not gonna win.

Although the Giants did well without him in the playoff's its hard to replace someone like him. He play's with emotion and when the Giants sucked, he was one of very few bright spots on the team. After his breakout rookie yr, all the teams have doubled teamed him since, leaving other recievers with less coverage. As you seen with Boss when he stepped in to replace Shockey. The players all want him back and that should say something about him. He does not have the Tiki (me, me) mentality. They won the superbowl without him can they only become better with him? YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
