The Allen Deal Is Done

So maybe the Vikings inability to land a defensive end in free agency ended up being a good thing.

According to ESPN.com, NFL.com and the Star-Tribune, the Chiefs agreed on Tuesday night to accept the Vikings offer of its first-round pick and the first of its two third-round picks in exchange for All-Pro defensive end Jared Allen. The Star-Tribune is reporting that there is the possibility of another later pick being included as well.

The trade helps the Chiefs move on in their rebuilding plans. It gives Minnesota the vital piece to fix the most gaping hole in a pretty decent defense. Offensive coordinators should have nightmares trying to figure out how to adequately block Allen and Kevin Williams on passing downs (while also worrying about Pat Williams caving in the middle of the line with his massive body). Allen will give Minnesota the ability to rely less on blitzing next year, which will help what's a pretty mediocre secondary.

The big question with Allen is whether he's gotten his drinking under control. He's been charged with three DUIs in the past four years, but the Vikings believe that he's put that behind him. Of course, the trade also shows that character concerns are relative--it all depends on how good the player is.
