Brandon Marshall: I'm Not a Bad Guy

Brandon Marshall's trip through the television set has left him with a bulky cast on his right arm and a full rehab schedule. What it hasn't left him with, however, is much understanding for how the injury happened in the first place. After originally telling a bizarre story about slipping on a McDonald's wrapper, he updated the story to include a wrestling match with his brother. The latter tale made more sense but didn't do much to improve Marshall's already shaky history with responsibility.

He's got a court date pending for DUI, a bit of a party-boy reputation and has had other run-ins with the law dating back to college. None of which makes the wrestling story untrue but it has caused some discussion that Marshall might not be the salt of the Earth. A contrite Marshall addressed such concerns yesterday.
"Am I a bad person? That's what it seems to be because I cut my arm and everybody doesn't believe my story. It's one of those things that any and everything I do, I have to sit down and weigh the pros and cons. Whether it's walking through the grass and looking for ditches so I don't twist my ankles. I'm a professional athlete; I use my body to do what I do. So I have to be more careful."

It's interesting that Marshall uses ditches in his comments because that's just what he dug by fibbing in the first place.

Do you remember The Simpsons episode when Bart gets attacked by a wolf while taking a test in the hallway? He's feigned sickness and other excuses to get out of taking the test time and again and when he actually takes it, he gets attacked. He tries to get help but no one believes him, he's the boy who cried wolf once too often and pays the price for his previous prevarications.

That's the same spot that Marshall finds himself in today. It's not that people can't believe that he was roughhousing with his brother or that its a terrible thing to do. Everyone with a brother has done it, after all. It's just that the previous bad acts and the lie that preceded coming clean, not to mention other instances of irresponsible athlete injuries, have combined to make people think twice before accepting what he says at face value. That's just human nature.
