After a couple of days about of rumor-mongering regarding a potential trade that would have Jeremy Shockey landing in New Orleans, things are starting to crystallize more and more.Yesterday we mentioned a report from Giants beat writer Mike Garafolo that the Saints offered their second-round pick (#40) and third-year strong safety Roman Harper for Shockey and that the Giants turned that down. That set off some alarms for me -- I was shocked the Saints would offer that much. Turns out I was right.
In response to our blurb regarding a report in the Newark Star-Ledger that the New Orleans Saints offered a second-round pick and safety Roman Harper for Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey, a source with knowledge of the discussions tells us that the Giants wanted a two and Harper, and that the Saints refused. This makes much more sense. The Giants should have interest in Harper after losing Gibril Wilson to the Raiders, and if the Saints were to actually agree to that deal I think Czar Goodell would choose to investigate for collusion.
I stand by my earlier belief that closer to the draft the Saints might go as high as that second-rounder alone (which I still think is too much to pay), and that if the Giants don't accept it the Saints will have no problem walking away from the table for good.

I still think the "source" for Florio's story/rumor were the voices in his head.

Jeremy Shockey leaving the Giants for the Saints? It would be shocking that the Saints get Jeremy to play in New Orleans and solidify the offense.

A draft pick for proven commodity.
Shockey may be coming of an injury, but is a perennial pro-bowler.
The trade for a second rounder and a young guy who himself was injured, is not that bad a trade.
The smallest question mark of the three pieces to this trade, is Shockey.

I don't agree with this at all....proven player? Pro Bowl? In his first few years yes. But he's injury prone, and emotional (in a bad way) me first player who is more known now for his list of injuries than his exploits on the field. Two things: the Giants won the Super Bowl without him, and plenty of people think Eli's maturation had EVERYTHING to do with Shockey not being in the huddle. And this is also the same guy who almost bailed on being with his team at the SUPER BOWL! Oh yeah, lets trade a 2nd and an up and coming saftey who's now two years removed from an ACL. I couldn't be more against it. I'd give a 3rd, max.

Jeremy Shockey is a good player, yes. But you don't give up another good player on your defence when your defence ranked 26th over all. I think that Shockey would be more of a destraction than anything else and questionable as to if he could stat healthy. We have two tight ends in Billy Miller and Eric Johnson that are more than good especally since both had over 300 yards last year. Instead of trading for a tight end like Shockey, we should try to trade for a corner that has the ability to be a shut down, in your face corner and solidfy the defence. Why not use the first round pick to trade for some one like this since this draft class is weak.
