Steelers LB James Harrison Charged With Slapping His Girlfriend

This is bad news for any number of reasons, least of which are the potential football-related implications: according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Steelers linebacker James Harrison was charged earlier today with "slapping his girlfriend across the face and breaking her cell phone in half."

The couple had argued and Tibbott locked herself in the bedroom, the affidavit stated. She was attempting to call 911, when Harrison broke through the door, took her phone, slapped her in the face and knocked off her glasses. Police said she had red marks on her left cheek. Tibbott told police she was afraid of Harrison, the affidavit said.

Harrison is charged with one count each of simple assault and criminal mischief. He was arraigned yesterday before District Judge Carla Swearingen and released with a nonmonetary bond.

Harrison, who was also part of the Super Bowl XL winning team, admitted that he had argued with his girlfriend and went all "Hulk" on her bedroom door before slapping her. Obviously, it's never a good idea for a man to put his hands on a woman -- no matter what she does -- and in addition to the legal issues, Harrison will have to face consequences not only from the Steelers, known for maintaining a squeaky-clean image (Dan Rooney used his mulligan on Bam Morris), but from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who has shown very little tolerance for law breakers.

Harrison replaced Joey Porter last season and made his first Pro Bowl appearance in February. The former undrafted free agent was cut on four previous occasions before finally sticking in Pittsburgh for good in 2004.

No, a woman is not always right and some of them work to manipulate responses but violence is NEVER an appropriate answer unless actual physical danger exists. Since this lady had locked herself away to avoid further interaction she is CLEARLY not the guilty party here. I am sick to death of athletes being given a pass on expected decent behavior just because they can run or catch etc. What does it say about our society that football players actually think what they do is so important. Now, Dr. Jonas Salk or even Bill Gates I might give leeway to. THEY have worked to help millions of people.

It is never right to physically abuse anyone it has nothing to do with race or gender. If someone is not able to control their actions the the party in danger should run away from it as quickly as possible. When people lose control they do stupid things. Even if someone is more physically capable of defendinding themselves the one out of control can escalate to other weapons of destruction. We read about it everyday where someone goes out of control & the next thing you know people are killed or permanently injured. As far as celebrity status goes they are merely human beings as well. What they do is pubicized more & does impact their impact as role models. However everyone is a role model to someone. Many parents do these same stupid things & their children watch & learn from it. People who can't control themselves are dangerous.

We only made this nation what it is today to have it stolen away by these built in excuses of why we're so inferior.
