Examining Manning to Tyree, the play that changed the Super Bowl.
The 32-yard pass from Giants quarterback Eli Manning to wide receiver David Tyree late in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLII is already becoming the stuff of legend. It brought Manning out of the shadow of his big brother, it transformed Tyree from obscure special teamer to household name, and it moved the Giants toward their game-winning touchdown in one of the most thrilling moments in NFL history.
But it almost didn't happen. At the start of the play, Patriots linebacker Adalius Thomas was about a foot away from sacking Manning, which would have all but ended the game and completed the Patriots' undefeated season.
Lined up at right defensive end opposite Giants left tackle David Diehl, Thomas got a great first step and forced Manning to step forward before he completed his drop. In fact, the first words out of Fox announcer Joe Buck's mouth on the play were "Pressure from Thomas off the edge."
But Manning stepped forward to avoid Thomas, and then it was time for two of Thomas's teammates to have their shots at Manning.

Great play, great escape, great catch. I was rooting for the Patriots and knew the game would be over when they started pulling on his shirt. I watched in dis belief as Eli broke out and my chin hit the floor as I watched the replays of the catch...I thought the Pats could contain and hold off, even when they scored, I was sure Brady could come back..Thrilling superbowl. Would have prefered 19-0, but the drama behind all this is good too.
Already looking forward to next year..Belichick, Brady and a fwe others will be pissed off,,you thought they were the evil empire before,,its going to get ugly next year...so congrats to the Giants, enjoy the victory, you certainly earned it

Great article. Way to lay it all out frame by frame. Also, glad we don't play the Pats next year and I feel sorry for the teams who do. Belichick, once he get over this loss, will be out for blood. He'll start with giving his team a kick in the a$$ for being outplayed by a supposedly inferior team. After that, we can all look the Pats to make it their goal to stomp the crap out of everybody next season in an effort to get back to the SB, which to me is the only thing that could take the taste of this defeat away. Wouldn't it be somthing if the Pats and Jints both got back to the SB next year? What a game that would be.

Thanks for this breakdown. Though the defense delivered this win, and Plaxico had the game-winning catch, it was David's catch, the "Catch in the Hat", that will give all of football (not just us Giants fans), a lasting legacy, along with the "Immaculate Conception", "The Catch" and the "Music City Miracle".

IS MICHAEL STRAHAN REALLY THAT ARROGANT, DOESNT HE HAVE A SOFT SIDE, THE SIDE I SAW WAS VERY ARROGANT AND DOWNRIGHT ANNOYING. I DON'T FIND HIM FUNNY AT ALL
HE DOESN'T GIVE TOO MUCH CREDIT TO OTHER TEAMS. SAYING HE STOMPED THEM IS NOT TOO CLASSY AT ALL. HE IS WORSE THAN T.O AND L.T. I HOPE HE'S BACK NEXT SEASON AND THE GIANTS GET THEIR ASSES KICKED, ONLY BECAUSE STRAHAN IS THE MOST ARROGANT OVER PAID CLASSLESS JERK
